It’s about being hesitant to face the real world. You have bags packed, and your parents can’t shelter you anymore..they urge you to go because you really need to. you don’t know what all is out there and you are scared. The song is saying how you’d guess you’ve won. Making you think about all the times you wanted to get out of your house & be the grown up that you are becoming. “…Goodbye again”, you are having a harder time leaving your home. Harder than you thought when you were a hard headed teenager. Your parents spread the news…telling everyone you are going off now. The song tells you not to forget your shoes because it will be a long walk. & That you know what you could lose - meaning that you probably are going off to meet big expectations that might not work out. You will have mountains to move which means you will have some hard obstacles. Maybe you are going out in the world trying to make someone proud. The song says you can’t meet the mark of all your saints. That is so true because sometimes people have expectations that are not realistic. They aim for something high, and you’re just trying to keep things simple. He mentions how things are hard and that they are going to get harder. I think he might be refering to recession…because to get anything big accpompished these days it will call for more and more money - which you probably don’t have. “Good luck out there getting what you think you are headed for…” That is saying that it will be hard to get what you want, and things might not go as planned. The song goes into saying how before you were in the real world you had no fears. & would do anything…there was nothing you wouldn’t do. But now you see that the world you saw before you were acutally in the real world is nothing like it. You aren’t as daring now…because now your actions have bigger punishments. Life can’t be a game anymore. It is somewhat sad, but how it is. one day you have to grow up. This song is the perfect to listen to if you are going away for awhile to find something or fufill a dream, or some expectation everyone thinks is crazy…or even if you are starting to grow up.
