Gary Numan Biography | Reviewer: Jo Weir | 4/18/2007
Gary Anthony James Webb was born at 10:30PM on the 8th of March 1958 in Hammersmith, London. originally lead singer of the punk pop band Tubeway Army, Gary's first album was released in 1978. But he did not enjoy chart success until 1979. Accidently discovering an abandoned Mini Moog in a recording studio had prooved a massive favour, Webb had written his own electronic album in under a week, and by 1981 he (now under the solo pseudonym Gary Numan) had enjoyed 2 number 1 singles (Cars, and Are "Friends" Electric) and 3 number albums (Replicas, The Pleasure Prinicple, and Telekon.)Other hits include We Are Glass, She's Got Claws, and We Take Mystery (To Bed).
As the decade progressed his record sales steadily declined and his glum-robotic persona was replaced by that debonair man-about-town who also enjoyed aviation. In March 1982 he attempted to fly around the world in his light aircraft and was arrested in India on suspicion of spying. The charge was later dropped, and he soon completed his journey. While his reputation among music critics atrophied amid accusations of anachronism, his fan base remained solid, though his recordings continued to reach the lower placings in the UK charts.
1994 brought the release of the industrial-tinged "Sacrifice", the first glimmering of Numan's return to critical favor and underground hipness. Over the next few years, many highly accaimed bands were covering Numan and citing him as a massive infulence: NIN, Foo Fighter, Marilyn Manson, Sugar Babes, Basement Jaxx, Smashing Pumpkins, Beck, and many more.
"Exile" and "Pure" were to follow, both massively popular in underground industrial music, and critically accalimed. chart success was to follow again, the highest single reaching #13 in the UK charts with Crazier, a Gary Numan vs "Glaswegian rocker" Rico track.
Gary's latest album: "Jagged" was released on the 15th March 2006. An album launch gig took place at The Forum, London on 18 March followed by successful UK, European and US tours. Gary is now 49 years old, he is married to Gemma O'neil (always an avid fan of Gary's) and has recently had a thired daughter; Echo, to join Raven and persia. He is now praised as the Godfather of the synthesizer, an electro pioneer, and will be creating brilliant albums for years to come.
