I stood by someone while they were going through many tough times and this is how I am repaid. So my interpretation is that someone got the best of me, in the sense that they got one over on me. Before the end, fans were smothering him, he couldn't go anywhere privatly, he said he hated how he always had to be hidden away in his appartment from it all. He took Heroin to rid of the tension because every one had taken his faith, and it got the best of him. He gave in and committed suicide. If you read Dave's lyrics with this in mind, it all makes sense, even though there can be plenty of sonarios.
