Not only does this make sense, but it is absolute genius. Gin, with its high alcohol concentration, and kerosene are both flammable liquids. By spitting it out and lighting a match, they are "burning the bridge," both literally and in a metaphorical sense, thus ending their relationship. Brilliant songwriting.
