When a patient takes lithium it "weakens" their manic state, and enlightens their depressive state. When many people take lithium they often find it takes away from them because it has a tendency to make a person neutral. I believe this song is about whether to take the lithium, and loose a part of you in a sense (some writers (me) find it much more difficult to write when they are happy). Or to not take the lithium and have to hold onto the bad sides of Bipolar Disorder to keep the good. I can defiantly relate to the feeling. I suffer from depression, and it can be so awful, but I'm scared of getting help.
