But forgiveness is not free, either. Remember what it cost you to forgive someone who hurt you badly? Is it not true that sin hurts people? It also blinds the sinner who tries to cover up and/or justify it. So even if God forgives your sin in eternity, there are still real, practical consequences that we, as sinners should make up for. Often we are ignorant of who we hurt, especially given the secondary effects of sin. That is a logical justification for indulgences - it's a convenient way for people to make up for all they hurt they caused. The Catholic Church just acted as the middleman between the sinners and the those who were hurt. Of course, such a money stream will corrupt any but the most holy of saints. And it will attract the vilest of sinners. As Scott Peck (a Unitarian) pointed out in his book "People of the Lie: A Psychiatric Examination of Evil", evil people love to hide in churches because that is the nature of evil -- to pretend to be good. I highly recommend Peck's book - it is fascinating. You won't be able to put it down. The beginning was a littl weird but when it really started going more and more into the song, I loved it. Now that I know the words to it, I love it even more, because it speaks the truth about most religions that hide behind doors of God this and God that, but they are the ones commiting most of the sins in this world.
