I think the song speaks to the shared experience of all Irishmen, whether the native, or the 'planted' - those who fly the tricolor, or those who live under the Union Jack. For both left their homeland to find 'a better life than they left behind', in nations all across the earth. In doing so they all maintained that bond to 'home'.

I found this beautiful song by accident. It may refer to Ireland which I love but the lyrics ( except for the colors of Green,
White and Gold) speak to the hearts of many immigrants.

Agree with the comments above. Always brings a tear to my eye (not a common experience for me or for most Irish men!). Goes a long way towards capturing the essence of the intangible that are the bonds between the America and Ireland - may they remain strong throughout the ages to come. From a proud citizen of both countries.

the ultimate Irish- American song ! | Reviewer: Pat Foley | 4/19/11

I am 1st generation American Irish and no song I have ever heard captures the essence of that special loving relationship between the Irish and America. They were there with Washington when he crossed the Delaware & they are still in the ground at Gettysburg from both sides North & South!

I had never heard this song until two days ago when I received my new double cd by Tommy Fleming. It is a gorgeous song and Tommy sings it beautifully. And yes, I too have been playing it over and over in my car!!! I am USA born but my daughter was born in Ireland. So I am Irish by injection!!!!
