The Reviews about Between The Bars (page 2/ 3)
------ performed by Elliott Smith

Between The Bars | Reviewer: Lucrieno | 1/30/08

I truly believe that this song is about alcoholism. Those that have struggled with alcohol in their past can very clearly identify with what he's saying in this song; however, the beauty of Elliott Smith's songs, is that they are open to interpretation and people can identify with them on so many different levels. Thank you Elliott for such a beautiful song. PEACE.

Desperation rather than alhogol speaking | Reviewer: marius | 1/29/08

this song is not about alhogol this song is about desporation coused by the realisation of patheticness of youre past "The images stuck in your head. The people you've been before
That you don't want around anymore" and future "With the things you could do
You won't but you might
The potential you'll be that you'll never see
The promises you'll only make". life. I can only guess that elliotts desperation comes from the realisation of his own weeknesses and thus absence of freedom which he thinks would allow him to do thigs that might just make nuthingness( meeningness, acidental nature of our existance and lack of any permament consequences of our actions) at list a little bit more bareble
"Drink up baby, look at the stars
I'll kiss you again between the bars
Where I'm seeing you there with your hands in the air"
this i belive is desperation rather than alhogol talkig. realisation of nothingness will strike him between every sip of alhogol and he will finaly move to the stage of acceptance of nothingness and this will become the only truth he can now rely on "Keep you apart, deep in my heart
Separate from the rest, where I like you the best" this is desperation becoming his only ally and at this point elliott finds this reliable konstant he needed so badly.
"Waiting to finally be caught" this realisation of nothngness this desperation is what caches him like the wind or the river and he now can let himself drown in selfpitty while letting desporation carry him in a vicious curcle

From the drink to the drinker. | Reviewer: fish | 1/23/08

I believe that the song is written from the perspective of the alchohol to the alcoholic. Listen to it again and imagine the internal struglle an alchoholic has in their mind as the addiction manifests itself as a voice in their head.

Kidnapping | Reviewer: y | 1/22/08

To me the song sounds more and more like it could be about a stalker or a big bad guy trying to kidnap a woman who's getting progressively drunk at a bar or two. Some lyrics sound incredibly ominous to me. When I sing them I feel evil:
"Do as I say and I'll make you OK"
"Keep you apart"
"Separate from the rest where I like you the best"

Kidnapping | Reviewer: Anonymous | 1/22/08

I think this song is about a stalker waiting out a girl getting drunk in a pub crawl, and laying a trap for her, kidnapping her between bars.
"Do as I saw and I'll make you OK"
"Keep you apart"
"Separate from the rest where I like you the best"
It makes me feel evil when I sing along these lyrics.

hands in the air waiting to finally be caught | Reviewer: Nina | 1/13/08

When I hear him sing "hands in the air waiting to finally be caught", I have this picture in my head of this girl in her twenties at a bar/party, drunk, dancing and swinging her hands in the air, and the part "waiting to finally be caught" is how it's fun while the party lasts, but in a way she would just like someone to get her out of the whole drinking and partying thing... I don't know, it's hard to explain.

rambles | Reviewer: lacey | 12/31/07

I heard that he wrote this song and wrapped it around a bottle of whiskey and gave it to a friend. could be just a kinda cool story or whatever but it makes since. so i'm guessing the whole song is pretty much talking about drinking. as simple as it sounds i guess. the effects that the alcohol is having on you while you drink it. maybe i'm just an alcoholic that loves music but that's what i get from it. :) kiss you again, between the bars. obviously this whole song is metaphoric about drinking and the effects of alcohol or any other "drug" that makes you feel eurphoric that you can partake in. *shrugs*

Multiple personality disorder? | Reviewer: Anonymous | 12/30/07

This could be a stretch but I listened to this song about 20 times in a row..I agree you can just feel it, but there is the desire to understand it, especially since he killed himself right afterward.

Could he be rescuing his partner, someone who has been haunted by many personalities, personalities she did not want trying to push her into a certain way....Kissing her between the bars could be an analogy of her being trapped/imprisoned by multiple personalities..he'll kiss her regardless of how he has to reach her...he'll tuck her away, keep her safely in his heart, away from "the others"

An interpretation | Reviewer: Anonymous | 12/31/07

This song is incredibly deep and touching, like being deeply in love. Altough some of the lyrics are a little confusing, it is all about the feeling this song creates when I listen to it; it doesn't necessarily have to make sense. However I do feel that the image of kissing between bars implies a sort of "don't completely know my lover" feel. "Between the Bars" litterally means there is a sort of barrier between the two, like they can never be totally inside eachother's world. It is this mysterious appeal that can make a lover so alluring.

meaning | Reviewer: Anonymous | 12/13/07

There is no need to concentrate on lyrics so much. It's about the feeling... So try to feel what you feel when you listen to it, and do it a couple or more times. Then you will get your own story out of it, and you won't be trying to decipher it.

I believe this is the main purpose any song is supposed to fulfill in us, receivers.

Peace ~*
