My absolute theory about this song is that perhaps elliott or someone he knew was in love with this Amity character who stayed open all night..like a neon sign. This Amity character walking like a lucky charm and elsewhere on XO seems to be looking for potential customers rather than maybe what elliott might have wanted..real love which is a huge blow to someone who grew up with crazy family relationships...desperately craving real romantic love. Either he figured this out right away and tried to love the person anyway or he slowly realized it. If I remember correctly some of the photos of XO were from the american (neon) sign museum in cincinnatti ohio. My theory is that this Amity character could possibly be a Tristessa type lover...ala Jack Kerouac This word amity means a gesture of goodwill or friendship such as international goodwill....so good to the many different "cultures"... then again who knows...
