The Reviews about The Last Resort (page 2/ 2)
------ performed by Eagles

The Last Resort | Reviewer: Lee | 9/25/07

This song gripped me from the first time I heard it in the 1970s, during late high school. I was depressed and misanthropic, and this song captured that melancholy with its slow crescendo of instrumentation and that last progression that ends, not on the dominant note in the major key, but on the tonic note, giving the entire song a somber mood. Now, years after it came out as the closing track on the Hotel California vinyl, it acquires new meaning as we stare down the prospects of global warming and its consequences. Indeed, this paradise, our planet, may have been given the kiss of death. We may be nearing the point when, as a successful species, we need to "kiss it goodbye," along with our brief span of a hundred millennia. The lyrics and the arrangement are more applicable now as social criticism than when they were first released, but even more than criticism they are simply a stunning, captivating, emotionally taut rendition of the paradoxes of Progress, whether fueled by religious rationales or secular justifications. It may be the best song ever put together by the group, incredibly more powerful in message and composerly qualities than songs about streetcorners in Winslow or spell-casting women.

When I die... | Reviewer: Larry | 5/25/07

I want this song played at my memorial service (along with John Lennon's "Imagine"). It is one of the few pieces of popular culture that had the courage to draw the connection between the arrogance born of religion and the systematic destruction of the environment and other "bloody deeds" here and abroad.

good song! | Reviewer: angel strong | 3/5/06
