this a fantastic song...but it has different meenings to people. i think it is about someone who has suffered emotional dammage and has
"shut themself down" the person does not want to be hurt so he looks for someone without imperfections who can't hurt him. i know for a fact that turning off your emotions makes it hard to feel pain, sorrow and even "good" emotions. he is too fearful so he lives as a detatched loner...

I've heard this song for so many years..been with me sing i was a kid. I never really took the trouble to pay attention to the lyrics until a couple of days ago. Imagine finding the beautiful words amongst the amazing notes; it's awesome. I can't believe I missed out so much of the song! I'll be looking forward to the next time i get to sing this song live..
Love it to bits..
Great great tune | Reviewer: Anonymous | 3/4/08
This song has both a beautiful melody and lyrics that evoke great poetic imagery. It speaks of a romantic loner, such as is in many of us. This song speaks of someone who takes solice in being detached and alone, even though that detachment brings longing for meaning with another. And in the end, the song concludes with hope for something better. Great tune. It has it all.
Don't Kid Yourself | Reviewer: Robert | 1/26/08
At the short side of 50 years old, don't kid yourself that it NOT ok to carry on one's life happily and succesfully without a "significant other" in one's life.Life has plenty of motivating factors and joy to NOT spend too much time hoping your quasi-soul-mate will pop out from among the pages of life.

Song for Richard | Reviewer: Doc | 11/12/07
I had a nephew who was also my best friend. This was the only song he ever knew all the words to, because he lived the life of a Desperado and always looked for what he couldn't have. He died in a tragic housefire, and this has been our "Richard Song" ever since.
Miss ya, buddy....

they say "life is too short to spend it alone"...
...and Desperado's lyrics answered...
"you better let somebody love you before it's too late". muy claro!
From a time when real musicians were in the charts. | Reviewer: Anonymous | 4/20/07
I particularly like the German version by Udo Lindenberg Und Das Panik - Orchester. Brings an extra big tear to the eye but not as much as the very dull sad Johny Cash version. Actually I'd love to hear Tom Waits do a version of it. But just about every1 who was some1 in the seventies covered it.
Anyway I love the original and The Doolin Dalton which is kind of part of Desperado or the two go together as a concept if you like.
Great Eagles Song!!! | Reviewer: Anonymous | 4/11/07
This is my second favorite song. It has so much meaning in it. It's saying you don't need to go all your life trying to look for that "perfect" person because they're not out there, but so many good lovers will come your way and it's up to you to make the best choice. Also don't settle down with a gold digger because they'll robb you blind and leave you to die. Your diamond's out there just keep looking
