The green fields of France is an outstanding song. It was so great to me I decided to do my English report on it. Hey,it got me an A...so it must be good =)
My own great-grandfather lies burried in the green fields of france. | Reviewer: Anonymous | 6/7/06
euhm this song is about WW1: 1916 was a date in the first world war, not in the second. Young Willie McBride probably didn't storm any beaches. (for the person who wrote the review above)
I myself quite like this song. As a Belgian girl and history teacher I am quite interested in World War 1 and 2. My own great-grandfather lies burried in "the green fields of france" (in Calais, to be specific). He died exactly 20 days before the ending of World War 1. So to me, this song is of great emotionaly value. I consider this song as my word of "thank you" to the generation that died for my country. Also the brave soldiers that fought in 1940-1945 get my gratetude, for saving my country from the nazi-regime.
The sentence "did they really believe that this war would end wars" might refer to a Belgian monument, the "IJzertower", with the words "nooit meer oorlog" on it. This means: "no more war" and the monument was built right after world war 1, to remind the people of the horor of war, and to make sure it never heppened again. This tower, the "IJzertoren" in Diksmuide has the sentence " no more war" on it in four languages.
anyone who's interested in world war one I recommand this website: http://www.inflandersfields.be/default2.htm
listen to this song and think of the young people (the average age of people in the trenches was 20) that died and fought for our future. Never forget them!!!
Its some song | Reviewer: Emmet Dalton | 2/24/06
This song really defines a moment in our history by asking the question " Do people really believe that wars end wars"!!! The song is beautiful and really tells the story so well of how a latter generation wonders about WW2 and how men got the bravery to storm the beaches.
Great version
