Finding where my holiness goes | Reviewer: Anonymous | 5/9/11
The essence of this song is glimpsing at being free of whatever is leading you around on a leash, sick for it. The number of these things is infinite. But to keep them at bay and to purify and to look in the mirror, you will see where your holiness goes as you radiate. To me, the author is glimpsing, and lapsing, but seeing and wondering.

I think the songs even more poignant in consideration of later events. If you get clean , a large part of yourself misses what went on when you werent - if drugs were "all bad" , no one would do them. When i hear clean, i think of the self talk i give myself, reassuring myself, making myself feel good that im not currently doing anything, but there a loudness in my head that misses the friends i had then, and the times that i had then. This song i feel echoes that sentiment - a proclamtation of bravery, belying a general feeling of "what if...". the song title could almost have a "..." after it. I had a great time on drugs, perhaps im lucky, but i suffered no ill effects. My cessation of drug taking was incidental. I havent had anything for just over a year, and this song makes me think of the times i lay in bed, before going to sleep, remembering certain times, and longing for them. The only negative ive experienced , is that having ceasing their use, what else is there. Theres no comparison between sober reality and habitual drug use - the two exist on seperate planes. I have my shit together , granted, but the loss i now feel is horrible in its depth. Its like mourning a loved one, or waking from a beautifull dream. Cliche - whatever, for those reasons, this song stirs something inside.

Great posts and I generally agreee with all of them but I think its important to note the one lyic "Somtimes". Clean sometimes... which can translate to any aspect of maturation and moving on. I think despite the fact that everyone moves on from drugs, the past, etc. somtimes we slip and that's ok because moving on, even though we slip sometimes is better than staying where we were...just as long as we never slip so much as to make things like they once were, as long as things stay better.
Amazing:) | Reviewer: Ilina | 1/12/09
The lyrics of these song is quite referable to Dave Gahan's drug addiction( even though it's culmination happened few yers after the relese of these song), but I think this song is referd to getting over some situations, problems and conflicts in our lives. It don't have to be alcohol or drug addiction, it is something that we feel more mature after passing it.

I was listening to Depeche when I was younger.. /I mean to listen their music at home, all the time../ Several years later, I am listening to their songs again and again.. mostly because that music is perfect when I am at home, working on something.. In last several days I heard this song many times but didn't pay attention.. /should I mention many things have changed during years of not listening to Depeche.. one of them is experience with drugs../ And all of a sudden, his voice came to my brain not just music to my ears and I realised what this song is about.. /English is not my mother tongue, so it's not strange that sometimes I forgot to translate songs and listen to words in them.. / Then I found lyrics.. here.. hehehe.. Yes .. the song is about heroin.. about being clean.. It is so clearly said, that I can't believe I haven't noticed before.. now when I have problems to stay clean.. :(
Absolutely fantastic | Reviewer: Anonymous | 6/12/07
I love Depeche Mode so much because they seem to sing about many situations that I have lived before. Clean is the ultimate lyric in my opinion. Not only it means for me getting off from drugs, but also about quitting doing the wrong things in general and start looking for the things that really make you feel good, once again (or for once).
letting go | Reviewer: leiden | 7/21/06
I believe this song has some of the most amazing lyrics ever written. One must learn to let go of the past to be able to move on and like what one's moving onto.. being clean of a past that could hold one back.
Clean - Depeche Mode: one of their best | Reviewer: Anonymous | 9/8/05
Clean is possibly one of the best tracks, if, like me ur off the dope. It becomes more meaningful. I almost say, to truly value the lyrics: get addicted, then lay of the drugs, and listen again. Thanks a Lot Martin, very helpful.
