The Reviews about What Sarah Said (page 1/ 7)
------ performed by Death Cab For Cutie

subtleties | Reviewer: brent | 9/23/09

what i find particularly moving about this song is the small references to the hospital

i worked in a hospital as a housekeeper for 11 years and Gibbard's words like
"the I.C.U. reeked of piss and 409"...409 is viricide cleaner

or the reference to "vending machines and year old magazines" which is absolutly true

these make me feel the real loss that this person is feeling, like they have really been there

i would imagine a song like this would be very difficult to perform night after night because of the powerful emotions it invokes and that it seems to be insipred by real events

a work of art, very sad and beautiful

Sara | Reviewer: Anonymous | 9/4/09

My sister, Sara, had cancer and i watched her slowly deteriorate from the inside out. I was at the foot of her hospital bed looking into her wide eyes as she took her last breath on 9/2/09. She was 20 years old. We buried her today. This song really makes me think of that day. I'll love and miss her always. I will see her again...but not yet.

Beautiful | Reviewer: Zachary | 8/30/09

This song is just amazing, I know it must be hard for anyone who has to go through what is explained in the song.
The song is about a girl dying of a brain tumour to anyone who isn't clear on the meaning.

I find the song is meant to hit you hard, and soothe you with a gental piano and a voice of a thousand angels.

Happy 50th Birthday Baby | Reviewer: Jeff Allen | 6/17/09

Happy 50th birthday Sarah. Our girls are so beautiful and I'm forever grateful for you giving them to me. I'm not sure I would have made it these past 9 years without them. They're 16 and 12 now and I know you would be so proud.

We miss you terribly, but we take comfort in knowing you'll be there when we die too.

We love you.

meaning | Reviewer: Alexxx | 6/8/09

The lead singer of DCFC's best friend's wife, Sarah, was the inspiration for this song. She was walking in the park one day with her husband, when she suddenly broke down into tears. Her words were, "One of us is going to have to watch the other die."

In the music portion after "So who's gonna watch you die", you can hear the heartbeat very softly in the background slowly start to fade. And at the end, you can hear a doorbell.

This song is another masterpiece by Death Cab for Cutie.

meaning | Reviewer: Katy | 4/8/09

This song can pretty much be summed up in its last line. If you have ever loved someone who has died of a long, tragic death, like cancer, then you know "love is watching someone die".

You have to truly love someone to really be there for them, and stay by their side as they slowly deteriorate. It's no easy thing. That is how you can know who really loves you in your life, if they stick around to comfort you as you die.

favorite song of all time | Reviewer: LawlPatrol | 3/8/09

well in this story his loved one has died. and he misses her to death. hes angry and torn up inside because he realizes that he always took her for granted. when he looks back in time through memories he sees that he has next to none fond memories. the moral of the story is that you should love and charish the people closest to like relics because when they pass away you can have fond memories of them. this is what i depict of the song anyways.

Meaning | Reviewer: Anonymous | 2/9/09

I was just actually wondering if anyone actually knows the meaning behind the song, I understand it is set in a hospital waiting room. But who is Sarah supposed to be and is she the one dying? What does "Love is watching someone die" supposed to mean? Just curious as to the meaning.

shocked and apalled | Reviewer: vk | 1/6/09

Syd, i am contridicting what 'katie' said. this song obviously means very much to you, and i certainly agree that it is very moving, there are alot of storys up of how it hits close to hom. alot of music now adays has no depth, but DCFC always stirs e. Katie should be ashamed of herself, calling your surgery a sob story. if her mother is passing aswell, i would have thought she could be more sympathetic.
