really is simple | Reviewer: Richard | 8/9/12

Few of you hit the nail on the head, it is simple:

Older couple who have have lost that passion they had and no matter what they do try break it they reside in the same situation. It has nothing to do with homosexuality. It is just a phrase to suggest that the way they sleep is like brothers in a hotel bed, i.e. far apart from each on different sides of the bed.

Don't look to far into these lyrics. They are beautiful and tell a sad story

Its not about being gay... | Reviewer: coty hawes | 12/1/11

Actually i think its about a couple who have been together for years.. i.e. wrinkles disguise the youthful boy below...and they still love eachother...but they arent IN love anymore. "Now we say goodnight from our own separate sides"
brothers love eachother, but they arent in love. its a good comparison.

Sad, but poignant and beautiful | Reviewer: Anonymous | 11/1/10

Stefan is a homophobic moron. Now that aside, this song is one of the saddest songs I know. I introduce everyone I know to this song, if they are not already familiar with it. The meaning is very straight forward. It is a message from a man to his partner, with whom he has grown old. From the young man he once was, to the old man he now is, he recognizes, and longs for but cannot obtain their prior passion, whether due to his own inability or his partners emotional distance. Thus "Now we say goodnight from our own separate sides, like brothers on a hotel bed.” Personally I think it is a message from a man to a woman, but that is irrelevant as these feelings or loss thereof can apply equally to straight or gay relationships.

its not about homo's you fags | Reviewer: Stefan | 10/17/10

I dont see what all the fuss is about, the lyrics are actually really easy to analyse lol.

The first paragraph is simply about him growing old, and how his wrinkles masterfully disguise, so disguise well, the young kid in him

the first 4 lines in the second paragraph are describing how they are ATTEMPTING to leave their world behind via escaping on a motorbike, however, due to them not being in love any more ("you may tire of me" suggests that they are not in love)

soooo once lovers who would be in THEIR OWN BED as husband and wife, are now as if they are BROTHERS on a HOTEL BED

brothers = an unconditional love that cannot be broken because they are brothers, it isnt a choice you just love your bro.
hotel bed = strange, isolated, one time thing, lonely.

so its a 'rite of passage' song about love and youth to old age and loneliness

fuck all that homosexual shit

Reminds me of my Fathers passing | Reviewer: David | 9/19/10

this song just describes it all too well for me i bought this album in August '05 and my father died in December 2005, he was a trucker and left town as a getaway but also as a job to support our family. when he died the lyric we say goodnight from our own separate sides stuck with me and the beginning is the way my Dad felt i am positive of that after being away for so many years form his family. this album by DCFC helped me through those tough years following especially right at the time of it all.

Roomates | Reviewer: lou | 10/23/09

it's about love growing tired. because people change and while at their core they are still the same little kids, years of crap ages you into someone you don't recognize anymore.
And like many marriages, the love begins to fade because you begin to grow apart from this person you were once so close to and excited by because they are a stranger.
so you sleep in separate rooms/beds. and you stay around because your comfortable enough to stay but not brave enough to leave. you love the person because they are family but for no other reason.

if you've ever been in a relationship where you feel like "roomates" this is what they're talking about.

Amour aimer aime amour. | Reviewer: Nobody | 8/3/09

I think it's about realizing that love can never work long-term, because if two people are still together in a year or ten or twenty or more, they fell in love with who the other person used to be, not who they've become.

Clear meaning - distance, age | Reviewer: Ram | 6/10/09

Its obvious that the metaphor of brothers on a hotel bed refers to platonic love which in the case of brothers, is natural, but when it comes to a married couple, is not. Reading into the metaphor as being sexual actually misses the point so completely that it would in fact completely reverse the meaning of the song.

Church | Reviewer: Nick Berrrrr | 3/15/09

we talked about this in church,

i think it's about a man who when he was young he just had fun but as he grows up he starts relizing the world around him, and also about a couple who is so in love but grows apart and clings to having there own life and not wanting to be tied down but being trapped in there relationship

but idk

Beautiful song. | Reviewer: chris | 1/21/09

I think the song is about a man whose grown on the outside as well as on the inside.
the person he once used to be is still deep inside him, but hes changed and things have come in the way of how things used to be.
the person that this song is aimed at fell in love with the boy he speaks of in the beginning but now, since hes grown older and the little boy within him has been covered up, the two are growing distant.
he wants things to go back to how they were, he doesn't like how things have changed.
'like brothers on a hotel bed' is a metaphor for their relationship now, they are still together but they are not close anymore, theyre as far form each other as possible. if you were sleeping in th esmaebed as your brother, you would be sleeping as far away from him as possible.
the bed could be a symbol for their relationship, and they are both at either ends, alone, instead of in the middle, together.
I love death cab for cutie, their lyrics are so meaningful and i can relate a lot to them.

i love this song | Reviewer: grace g | 1/14/09

i fucking love this song its so........... i don't even the word for it but i love this song its like so ...... sad, happy and beautiful all at the same time its like hes a lost soul and you cant but feel sympathy and for some ppl empathy.

just a theory | Reviewer: lola | 11/16/08

i think all the lyrics ending up to when he says "brothers on a hotel bed" inform you about how the man realizes how hes changed from who he was when he and whoever he is in the relationship when they met. when he talks about breaking free from what they knew and that people yearn for the sea hes saying everyone wants something different than what they have had for a while. you can tell hes scared that his lover will get sick of him because hes changed and that people yearn for different things after a while.

i think its pretty clear hes scared that after a long period of time with his lover that they will get tired of the relationship and it will get to the awkward feeling of two brothers sleeping in the same bed. its like you dont mind because you care about them but its awkward because you dont feel that closeness to them.

Amazing and Beautiful song... | Reviewer: libby | 11/13/08

this song is filled with emotion. many people see it as homosexuality, truthfully i thought that at first until my english teacher explained the meaning of the song. its about a couple who have aged and are growing distant from eachother. he believes that he is young and handsome until he catches his reflection in the mirror and sees he has aged and changed. the couple realize that they are tired of eachother and try to get the relationship going again but fails when old habits come back. the song is beautiful and sad. the title and "brothers in a hotel bed" means that they are growing so distant from eachother...relate it to if you had to share a bed with a sibling....the same thing. you probably were on the edge of the bed....thats the best way i can explain it....

Brothers being the key word | Reviewer: Anonymous | 10/22/08

I can see were people could see it as homosexuality, but I don't belive thats what it is about. Some are using the arguement that a husband and wife are not like brothers, but not many express openly homosexual desires for their brothers. You may say I'm taking that one word to literaly, but let me ask you this, Why take other parts literaly but not that one, or vise versa?

Meaning | Reviewer: James | 9/19/08

Its about one guy, looking back on being young and not taking the time to see change as its happening, rather looking at the past and present many years on.
it talks of a man, who feels the same as when he was probably a young man but his body isn't matching the way he feels.
To the people who think this is about homosexuals, you really don't get the music at all, the part; "like brothers on a hotel bed" refers to himself and his younger-self, because they're so alike, they're like brothers. get it yet?
