During the filming of of The Man Who Fell To Earth, Bowie was having a rough time psychologically with this things happening on the set, which was keeping him up at night. So he found Jesus and Christianity for a while, and the result was Word on a Wing. That was also the time when he started carrying a silver crucifix, which he still carries to this very day (2009), even though he's not a religious kind of guy.
