Forgotten past? | Reviewer: Hungryforalynchin | 9/18/12
Maybe Lovecraft, more likely stories of ancient Atlantis & Lemuria going on Bowie's occult obsession, ages long past when man was still in touch with the gods. Bowie would've known known to go further than even Lovecraft if he was into Crowley.
Lovecraft piqued people's attention for (unconsciously?) mining this kind of esoteric territory. Kirby too.
The Eternals? | Reviewer: JM | 10/22/07
I'd never paid much attention to the lyrics, so I always thought it was a really loose interpretation of Nietzche with a bit of HP Lovecraft thrown in for good measure. Most people, both regular folk and critics I've read, seem to agree that it's Lovecraftian.
Anyway, I recently thumbed through some Jack Kirby old Eternals comic books, and many of the themes are strikingly smiliar. Ageless, immortal perfect men with god-like powers and the ability to join their minds in uni-thought. Seems familiar. Wonder if Bowie was into Kirby's comic books.

This song actually kind of scares me, with its frankly Lovecraftian theme of unfathomable Elder Gods ruling long past
with a nip of Neitze thrown in for good measure
i can easily see why hes considered an 'Art' rocker
Was Bowie reading H.P. at the time?
All i can say is if the rest of his work is this off-kilter,this offbeat and uncomfortable i look forward to it eagerly
