It was not about drugs in its origin | Reviewer: Dwayne | 8/2/10

Bowie has clearly stated in many interviews this song was written after he saw 2001. The name is a play off of Space Odyssey. He did see the movie several times and was high on drug while seeing it and probably while writing the song but the song its self was based off of the movie and the enlightenment the movie gave him. Ashes to Shes reference to Major Tom being a junkie was probably Bowie's admitting he was a junkie when he wrote the original. "And the papers want to know whose shirts you wear" was a reference to British slang for which soccer/football team do you support?

of course | Reviewer: Anonymous | 4/14/09

this song is totally about Bowie's heroin expiernce. if you were a real fan you would know that. in Ashes to Ashes he refers to Major Tom as a junkie; also stating in the song "you'd better not mess with Major Tom" of course it's about heroin!

Ground Control | Reviewer: The Wretched | 2/13/09

The song tells of a space cadet whom is sent into space on a mission and becomes depressed while being away from home.

I love this song, the music is mind melding - even for being from 1969. Great song. I also love his vocals in this song very much.

Memory Expansion Due To Drugs | Reviewer: hellmish | 1/17/09

xclnt poetry, im assumin the idea of the song being drug related would be true. He was a full blown heroin addict, lsd was a standard consumable...but was it an intended suicide note to himself. at that point in time he was going down hill physically. & then it became a love story . Sobriety Sucks

David Bowie: THE best rockstar EVER | Reviewer: Anonymous | 1/2/09

I was 25 when this song came out, and I never understood a word of it :-) but I've never loved any song as much... Now I am 74 and still don't understand a word of it ~ I only know my SOUL MELTS when David sings ..."I'm stepping out the door..."
PS ~ where is David Bowie today???

amazing and timeless | Reviewer: ana | 10/25/08

Supposedly the song was released to coincide with the Apollo 11 moon landing. The BBC featured the song in its television coverage of the lunar landing. However I always thought it was inspired by 2001: a space oddyssey, I mean this song came out in 1969 and the book and movie came out a year before.

Space Oddity; The Man who Fell to Earth | Reviewer: JanB737 | 7/16/08

I assume that he wrote this as part of the movie soundtrack for The Man who Fell to Earth.

I've heard that he mistakenly thought they wanted him to write all the songs for the movie (in addition to starring in it) but then they didn't use his music for it.

If you haven't seen the movie, and can handle unexplained plot holes/weirdness to go with nude women, it's a great movie.

Actually | Reviewer: Anonymous | 12/30/07

Supposedly, the song's about a "junkie" (Cos we know Major Tom's a junkie, right?) who's sent off to space and loses himself there on purpose (In Ashes to Ashes- "I'm happy, hope you're happy, too.") after saying goodbye to his wife and whatnot.

great song, but... | Reviewer: Anonymous | 12/7/07

i love this song as much as the next person (well, maybe not as much as the person who wants to marry it) but aren't we slightly misreading the lyrics by thinking that bowie is telling a story about a man on a space trip and getting lost in space? the first time i heard this song i concluded that it is either about an LSD trip or a heroin overdose (laugh all you want, but then go back a listen to the song with that idea in your head). regardless, i still love this rocket man -meets- dark side of the moon -meets- alice in wonderland song (and spare me with the "this came before that and that before this", i was simply stating what this song seems like to me.
