rarely mentioned first Bowie recording | Reviewer: ricardo | 1/26/2006

David Bowie is probably (and rightly so) ashamed of this tune, written in the same genre of British humour as the 'Carry On' films. It has a bouncy, singalong beat, reciting incidents of prisoner life and poking fun at usual establishment stereotypes. I haven't heard an airing since the time of its release in 1964. Even then it was only aired by the old offshore pirate radio stations, it made steady progress into the charts and was suddenly withdrawn from play and sale with no real explanation. Read the lyrics, put yourself in the mindset of mid 60's authority and make your decision. I was fortunate to find a vinyl 45 in relatively good condition in a jumble sale about 30 years ago.
