The era of sails and the era of pants with zippers did not overlap, Boo! French original sounds better too, poor translation, too close to the french meaning, too far from sounding good. Dutch translation by Ernst van Altena is a good example of how to not literally translate lyrics yet keep the gist and atmosphere intact, and make sound good at the same time (arguably not an easy feat in Dutch...) I only know the version from the 'bowie at the beeb' release, wherein the last line he sang "they've bargained their goodness \ their virtue's all gone". this page has switched "goodness" and "virtue".

Cheers;
