This song is not about his step dad, he didn't have one, nor a old girl friend.
This song and the others written around the same time were to be on the CD that never was released by the record label because the label felt that the music was too depressing and gloomy. They were later leaked out before the replacement CD was produced. These leaked songs collectively were known as the "Lillywhite Session" for the producers last name. The record company decided to bring in outside help to produce more upbeat songs. This was the 1st time an outsider of the DMB camp help write music for the band. Glen Ballard, helped Dave write music and lyrics for the new CD titled "Everyday" as well as produced it. The originally recorded cd that was known as the "Lillywhite sessions" was written by Dave during a tough period of his life when his long term girlfriend, whom he since has married, moved cross country to finish school. The depression of being apart took it's toll on him and darkened everything he did. Heavy drinking, not working with the band productivly could have wiped out DMB as we knew and know it. The Lillywhite recordings are a dark period of his personal life put to music. The Lillywhite sessions later emerged to the mainstream as "Busted Stuff".

grace is gone is a beautiful song that reminds me of a beautiful girl i use to date. ALM is her intials and ive tried to drink away the heartache but it still remains buried under my skin until i drink them to the surface again

There are rare occasions that we as human beings experience pure heart and soul pored into a piece of music. What do I think? doesn't really matter, it is how your soul responds. no other song moves me like this song. Thank Dave for making our lives here on earth a little bit better.
