The Reviews about Volcano (page 1/ 3)
------ performed by Damien Rice

Control and submission | Reviewer: rachel | 10/21/09

To me, these are two extremes of romantic involvement: a cool, proud detachment (Damien) and a wild, emotional, "feminine" love (Lisa). The volcanoes are Lisa's emotions that too easily overcome her and rule her life. She gives him everything he doesn't need, because she has built him up so much in her head.

Damien is the male stereotype in some love stories. He does not form an emotional attachment, he just accepts everything she offers and then the guilt sets in and he wants to break it off. He is bitter and cruel; she is innocent and forgiving. He wants a bit of conflict and passion, and even though she doesn't provide either, he is reluctant to leave because he is comfortably in control.

Lyrics? | Reviewer: Anonymous | 9/2/09

Im pretty sure the song isn't based on an older man and a younger woman, i think the concept of the song has more to do with the man not being attached to a woman who would give anything to hold him down with her.

not so literal | Reviewer: mashdana | 6/29/09

IMAO, this shouldn´t be narrowed down to the stereotype of older guy/ younger girl relationship dynamics. for me, it´s just about someone who´s got more experience, probably just disappointed, who is sort of trying to redeem himself by setting warnings before giving in to temptation...and about the "you give me miles, and miles of mountains" verse, it´s just as simple as no matter what you give me, I´ll ask for more until you´ve got nothing else to give. the use of the imagery it´s more in the service of embellishment than methaphorical reasons. this is not about romantic notions, it´s more about the raw, burning desire and the warning is basically that: don´t misread me, it´s not love it´s lust.

what I think | Reviewer: stockhol | 5/24/09

Well, when I look at the lyrics, yes, it is an older guy and a younger woman. But the whole idea behind it is he has sort of been hurt before and feels the needs to seperate himself from emotion. The line about mountains and sea referres to mountains being stable and part of foundation (like foundation for a meaningful relationship) but he'd prefer the turbulence (sea) of something not so plain. But, he realizes she is young, or rather, innocent. Thus, he doesn't want to taint her with his potential to act crazy with her. However, she acknowledges his hesitance and says she know he needs to be with someone more than just physically (I kissed your mouth, and back- is that all you need?) the idea is basically trying to pull someone from the idea that love isn't possible. She wants to save him

age difference | Reviewer: Anonymous | 5/5/09

<<For me this song is about a guy who is in love with a much younger woman. They both want other things in a relationship. He sings: don't hold yourself, she sings: don't throw yourself. You can literally see it in the last lines.>>

- I totally agree. It's also obvious in the line "you give me miles and miles of mountains and I'll ask for the sea" she loves him like young people feel love, reckless and fearless and wild an a bit overwhelming but he's looking for love like people who have already moved past that age understand it; steady and quiet and deep and slow-burning. the feeling is just as real to both of them but still neither can help *the way* they love, which makes it hopeless, regardless.

Good Song | Reviewer: Amor | 1/15/09

This song is perfect! In my eyes, it's about a girl who Loves this guy, but he doesnt love her back. He cares for her alot, but it's not love. But, No matter what, she will stay with him, knowing that he doesnt love her.

pathetic | Reviewer: Anonymous | 1/12/09

not sad...just pathetic. Song's ok, lyrics- story about pathetic guy. So very strenghtless...even not breave enough to say he doesn't want the girl...just trying to pretend he knows what's good to her. Give me a breake... Everyone has so many "psyhological problem"...yeach... once again..pathetic

The theme | Reviewer: Anonymous | 12/17/08

For me this song is sung by a guy who likes a girl very much, but isn't interested in any kind of relationship. She, on the other hand, loves him and doesn't realize that he doesn't love her back in the same way.

so, "What i am to you is not real...what i am to you is not what you mean to me."

it's sad, really, but so true.

meaning | Reviewer: Tom | 12/16/08

For me this song is about a guy who is in love with a much younger woman. They both want other things in a relationship. He sings: don't hold yourself, she sings: don't throw yourself. You can literally see it in the last lines: like a new disease, she's still too young to treat. She still has things to discover, he is already past that, so they can't be together.

re: i thought | Reviewer: Anonymous | 12/13/08

I came off a 4 year relationship which ended badly, and my best friend helped me through it. We fell in love with each other but I was still going through things, and so I didnt treat her the way she deserved to be treated because I was still emotionally unstable. It hurt me so much because I didnt want to let her go but at the same time I knew she didn't deserve this...so below is my thoughts on the song and how it relates to me.

What I am to you, is not real
[I am cruel to you, but its a front i put on]

What I am to you, you do not need
[You deserve better than to be treated cruely]

What I am to you, is not what you mean to me
[Although i act cruel, its fake i really love you]

You give me miles, and miles and miles of mountains and I'll ask for the sea
[You try so hard to make things work and I act as if its nothing or not enough]

What I give to you, is what I'm going through
[The world has been cruel to me, and now in turn I cant help but be cruel to the world]

Shes still to young to treat
[Life has made me cruel and i don't want to ruin your "innocence" in the sense you still have a good outlook in life]

and so...You do not need me
