I believe the song talks about a story when a man loves a woman.
Maybe, she's gentle, pretty, rich while he's not that confident. He knew he float like a cannonball and there was no good ending. In the end, they broke up.

He is missing her. When he looked back on their story, he has learnt a lot from it and he does not regret.

I think we all hear what we need to in a song, what makes sense to us at the time and speaks to that place inside that needs some comfort.I love the line 'stones taught me to fly' My sister and I heard it as 'storms taught me to fly' and that's cool too- we take it with us as a survival motto now :)

To me this song is about getting caught up in a love. It is good and intense, but removes you from things, and even perhaps your lover. Thus you "float like a cannonball." You are engrossed with your love and lose sight of everything else while being intertwined with another person. You are in a dark place yet the love you have is just enough to hold you. And, like some things do, it will probably end. (I hope our friend Damien finds another dear!)

i think this song is about finding someone that you are falling for, knowing that your take on life is skewed and bitter (being a cannonball). he wants to explore her more but doesn't want to scare her away with his darkness. (courage teach me to be shy...)he is open to learning a different view...

I Think this song is talkinga bout how when you know nothing, it's not hard to take everything the wrong way. and learn all the wrong lessons from the right things.

i think this song is about love freeing from all the ties of doing what's required to us by the society and by life itself. love can make us do things that we never dreamed of doing...the person singing this song wants love to stay in his heart so it's ok for him to not know everything.

i think its about someone being stripped away from them... but really suddenly (maybe even died). he probably never knew that he could fall in love.... and when he did.. it was bliss... but then it got taken away so fast that it hurt more than anyone could imagine. he is the heavy cannonball that never believed he could fly... but he did, so he started to believe in miracles and see things differently. when it got taken away... maybe a part of him died too, so he had no hope in life... no reason to believe... and so denies everything around him and reverts back to sarcasm (!) but its a beautiful song representing how one feels at that point when .. when you just give up i guess.

Life, love and relationships can really ruin a person who has never had much to hold on to in the world... I imagine someone whos been taken advantage of or maybe abondoned& never known happiness and finds a glimpse of heaven in the heart of angel. Angels arent supposed to hurt us and when your broken its hard to realize how vulnerable you are. You want to be saved but you dont know how to ask for help. Its hard for the meak and destitute to trust, care and open up to someone who maybe hasnt had to go threw as much pain as themselves... so when they do (trust)... it means so much more to them. And when things fail... its even harder to pick their heavy hearts off the gound. Everyones on their own path in this this race we call life but for some... the road is a little less paved. This song is about rock bottom... not about how easy it is to fall in love but how Hard You hit the ocean floor when its over...

there's a lot of meaning in this song. when the first time i heard this song i went back on my past love take makes me a year to move on. cannonball represent a bitterness that's why it said in the song that is not hard to fall when you float like cannon ball. because you fell inlove but the person you love hurt you. even you did everthing fore your love but its still useless. that why damien rice said that its not hard to fall in love if still have bitterness in your heart and anger.

For the Anonymous | 2/10/09: congratulations for you understanding of the lyrics and music, i feel the exact same way about it....and about your gy, if it hasn't happened yet, don't give up if you feel he feels it to, just wait who knows, maybe your time will come but not just yet: true love is hard to find, hard to reach, and some times just needs to grow bigger till you can't run from it, till it takes away all your fears.

my ex bfriend asked me to please listen to this song one night. I am not sure really how to take it because it can go either way, it's a very besutiful song but was he trying to tell me that he is moving on or that he misses me. Maybe a little of both huh!

love this song. Since I'm not together with my boyfriend, I listen this everyday. I still can't understand why that happened. I havn't seen him smiling since that day, so.. this song gives me a hope. Hope, that he will understand what he's thinking.

The beauty of music is that it speaks to us all. We are free to interpret it how we will. For one person, depending on their situation, this song...any song...may mean something completely different than it means to the next person. It's all in the individual interpretation .Some things aren't straightforward. Thats what beautiful.

i think this song is about codependency. always being so dependent on another person. "its not hard to fall when you float like a cannonball" meaning its not hard to love someone when you're shit at being alone. i dont get wtf everyone else is on about, i think it's pretty obvious.

This is one of those most touching songs of Damien's in my opinion. The lyrics really speak to me and I've just been listening to it on loop. My Damien Rice playlist can really get me through some difficult stuff.
