5 stars! | Reviewer: xxx | 7/26/07

‘Zombie’ is a protest song by Irish band The Cranberries, about the conflicts in Northern Ireland in nineteen sixteen known as ‘The Troubles’. More than a decade after the song came out, it still remains very much one of the band’s biggest hits. In the music video, Dolores O’Riordan, the main vocalist, is covered in gold paint surrounded by children and the general atmosphere is very depressing and morbid. There is footage of military occupation in the country and runs parallel to scenes of the band performing nearby. These clips seem to act to draw together the connection between the group and the ongoing conflicts. This song has such powerful meaning and an awesome sound. I was extremely moved by the powerful message that came across in the song and will highly recommend it to others.

The lyrics are meaningful and are mainly about the violence and horrors that child soldiers face and, to a certain extent, how their brainwashed minds turn themselves into zombies, hence the title of the song. This can be seen from part of the chorus which goes, “What's in your head, in your head, zombie, zombie, zombie?” I think the lyrics represent the band’s point of view of the entire situation, and it questions why child soldiers would want to participate in wars and contribute to unnecessary bloodshed. One particularly disturbing clip happens toward the end of the music video. As the song intensifies and approaches a powerful climax at the end, it portrays children turning on each other and ganging up on one helpless boy. That symbolism of ‘survival of the fittest’ and the whole ‘take care of only yourself’ idea really gives us a lot to think about.

The main instruments used in this song include the bass guitar, electric guitar, drums and a solo vocalist. The vocalist’s (Dolores O’Riordan’s) voice, unlike most melodic sounding songs, is rough and not the most heavenly sounding voice, but it is successful in conveying her anger at the ongoing conflicts. It is not overly unpleasant to listen to however, and possesses unique qualities of its own. I am sure that not many singers can sing like that.

The introduction of the song begins with a distorted sounding electric guitar, shortly preceded by heavy drumming. I especially liked how these two instruments from the start, continue throughout the entire song to form a heavy bass guitar riff, which gradually climbs to a noisier level as it approaches the chorus of the song. It connects to the title of the song, ‘Zombie’, by creating a hypnotic atmosphere throughout the song. In this case, as depicted in the music video, very young children are trained and taught to hold a gun and fight in the war. Similarly, zombies are actually dead bodies that are hypnotised to respond mechanically to instructions.

The structure of the song can most easily be described as: introduction  AABBCC  introduction  AABBCC  introduction + guitar solo. There are several repetitions of melodies in verses 1 and 2 but my favourite would be the hook from the chorus, which goes, “In your he-ad, in your he-ad, Zombie, zombie, zombie, hey hey hey…” It is catchy and has been stuck in my head ever since I first listened to the song! It really emphasizes the powerful message that the band is trying to bring across and just listening to that part of the song really makes me think about the poor child soldiers who are still being made to fight today.

To conclude, I really like this song. It successfully brings up an important matter that is still occurring in today’s world and requires the public’s attention and awareness, but still manages to deliver the message while maintaining the cool rock factor.

Another Classic to Add to the Shelf | Reviewer: Toscar Erad-Becdd | 5/20/07

Zombie is a song that has planly out lived all other music of it's time. A song that express such a depressing subject with a twist to not make it so depressing. In fact the tone of the the song is more "Let's go out and conquer the world because we won't make the same stupid mistakes." You can fall in love with the songs that are temperary but this type of song is going to be the one that you hear in your child's bedroom in twenty years. It has already stayed strong for what 16 years. Simply a classic that should be added on the shelf right in between Bohemian Rhapsody and The Rolling Stones.
