I've seen this happen enough, and I've been there myself. Perhaps that is why it's the first thing comes to mind on hearing it. Joey may have discreetly repaid her in his shame, and she is letting him know that she has indeed received it; or, conversely, she has become a success and no longer needs repayment, and is telling him "no worries"... While I don't necessarily disagree with the other theories, I hate to think that she's trying to buy "peace" by saying she can afford to keep him in his habits. That is far too low, far too ugly for such a beautiful and compassionate work of art! Unfortunately, enabling a problem does not and cannot fix it. My flashbacks about my younger self scare me. So my current self scares the little girl and the adult self. The money is for my therapy as they try to reprogram me to be strong and not so afraid. I often use drugs and alchohol to mask the pain and total fear that comes. There have been too many times I have been passed out on the floor, in the grass next to the railroad tracks, in a stragners house, you get the point. She loves this guy but doesn't know how to help him or understand what it'll take to make him happy...and love her. Look at the lyric about money: She just mentions it like she's throwing it out there. She doesn't know if it'll impress him. She doesn't know what it'll take to make him love her.
