Spies is about the spice pies that the author of the song found while journeying deep underground. "Spies" is short for "spice pies."

When the author refers to "they're all spies" what he means is that "they" (we don't know who this is) ate spice pies, and then became "spies." This clearly indicates that spice pies have an affect on the consciousness of those who eat them - they are a kind of psychoactive or consciousness-altering substance.

You cannot touch them, and they cannot touch you, because spice pies make people hypersensitive to touch. Spice pie eaters (or "spies" as I already established) are not capable of functing in normal society, so they hide out deep underground where they feast on spice pies.

A deeply disturbing morality tale, this song ends with the narrator losing his loved one to spice pie addiction. Notice the transition from "we" to "you" indicating that someone formerly associated with the narrator is now a spice pie addict.

I think this song is personal to the writer . We cannot fully understand what it talks about . But the gripping part about it...the fact that there is enormous truth about us being under constant watch and exposure.

i think the song talks about the fears that grip us and all the negative energy that surrounds us,, sometimes i feel there are these really negative energies in my room who scare me to death and fill me with so much despair,, i think its these who are the spies,, and the worst part is . . .u cant touch them, no :"(

This song could be inspired by 1984, but I think it's real meaning is that everybody has isolated themselves so much that we think everybody else is a 'spy' (this means we're spies too). But at the end of the day those 'spies' in our daily lives are only people looking for information like ourselves

In a way i think the meaning by the word speis in this song is that, when you die, you will walk around beside living people as a Spi or ghost. Try to read the text again and think about it. "You have to hide uself or The spies/dead people will find you."

First of all, Coldplay is my favorite band and it's songs have a special tune and quality to it that I find only in Coldplay's songs.
second of all, this song is my favorite besides "fix you" and "yellow"!

This song is the reason for banning "Parachutes" in China. I guess the authorities there felt guilty that the song's lyrics are representative of what their rule really is even though nowhere it is mentioned name of a country or political system
