All Right, But Nothing New | Reviewer: Anonymous | 4/24/2005 I was also anxious to hear some new material by Coldplay. To be honest, though, "Speed of Sound" gave me mixed feelings. On the one hand, Chris Martin's voice does sound better than ever, and it seems the band has improved upon their already formidable studio prowess with some of the richest sound texturing I've ever heard. However, I have to say that as far as songwriting goes, this is not a step forward for the band. The lyrics are uplifting, but don't have the poetic appeal of songs like "The Scientist", the out-and-out emotion of "Yellow", or the enigma of "Clocks". Speaking of which, no one seems to have pointed out that "Speed of Sound" has THE EXACT SAME BEAT as "Clocks", which makes me worry that this band that seemed to have no shortage of new ideas may have finally hit a speedbump in their creativity. I anxiously wait for Coldplay to dispell this fear with their new album, but until then, "Speed of Sound" just seems like a beautifully made re-tread of old material. Sort of groggy thinking, "Sounds good, sounds like Coldplay." Then the announcer says who it is. I wasn't even expecting an album! I thought it takes like 4 years. But now that I've given the single a number of listens, I'm exceptionally excited! They are exceptionally gifted musicians. It's so rare to find the real deal these days.
