I think that the best way to understand anything in a foreign language is to learn to speak it. Something is always lost in translation if you read a foreign song in English. However, that doesn't mean English is any less descriptive than say French. We just have more words to choose from so precise translations are hard to come by. There are plenty of beautiful English songs out there.
painting of the gilr? | Reviewer: haris | 10/26/08
@hbmk
I don't think she's painting a picture of the girl, we may be having a slight translation issue here. the verb "maquiller" (si je la maquille) means rather "make up" than "make a painting of"
I agree with your thoughts nonetheless.

best songs ever heard | Reviewer: sayantan ghosh | 8/10/08
this is the one of the best french songs that i've ever heard along with "pour que tu m'aimes encore" . the sweetness of the french language along with celine dion's singular voice makes these songs so nice. j'aime francais et j'aime celine dion
one of my favorites | Reviewer: hbmk | 5/28/07
i think they way words can be put in french mean so much more than the english ones. this song is an example of that. its meaning is so beautiful to me- i think it means that we dont change, we are always like the little child we once were, and we think we grow, but we dont. we dont forget who we were as a child- we just brush it aside. i used to not understand the part about painting a picture of the girl...i do now. it means she remembers the girl and she makes fun of her because she didnt acheive the dreams she once had. (though im sure celine really did acheive those dreams...) its just a very beautiful song and thats just my opinion on what it means. of course, i could be totally wrong :)
