the story | Reviewer: Anonymous | 1/15/09
This song is about people of a high school in Dallas Texas, 1975-76 era. Gibby Haynes's high school, back in the days of long hairs vs. jocks.
I will not name the school, but the mascot was and still is "Wildcats"..for those knowing his bio. I knew these people well, i knew gibby before he took up guitar. Some have died, others are still around. And just a sidenote of interest..Gibby's father was a children's tv show star known as Mr. Peppermint in Dallas in the 60's and early 70's...Peace to ya Gibby..a fellow long hair that made it still.
the meaning of this song | Reviewer: Quin | 1/15/09
I think pretty much everyone is right, at least partially. But i'm pretty solid on what I think the song is about. I think that he is describing the stupid things that these kids were doing and how much they loved that life-threatinng experience and then the chorus is about what is killing him. In the verse he talks about the things that are killing his friends but the thing that is killing him is a girl; hence "cinnamon and sugary and softly spoken lies." and yes about being drunk too.

Song DEFINATELY has some deisel(what we call it here in south jersey) reference. i dont know if the whole song is totally about it, but some for sure. The whole" sharing sharons's? outlet on the topic of disease"...i think it is sharing needles.......and i aslo believe alot of this could be modeled after things he saw in that game......?
Drugs | Reviewer: tarra | 11/6/08
It seems likely it could be about drugs, but at the same time, there are many other references in there. I don't know, maybe it's just me, but I feel like it's talking about how you should take a step back and look around, don't live to fast.
Pepper, vinegar, cinnamon and other popular flavoring agents | Reviewer: (ex)-chemist at large | 9/29/08
There's still a heroin epidemic in texas. Like another knowledgeable poster posted- it's bitter. In it's purest form it's merely bitter, and there is no "odor" off of someone using pure heroin- of course unless you're in a country where diacetylmorphine itself is legal, or are in the company of someone who decides to take a batch of tar off the street and refine it- you aren't going to meet many (actually any) using pure. Street H is made by taking a big ball of opium latex, boiling with acetic anhydride, and converting it into a big slop of stuff containing mostly heroin (depending on the various minor fractions of the starting latex), then converting to hydrochloride salt (giving the bitter taste) for solubility in water. Some asian sources separate the morphine out before the conversion, giving a higher grade of heroin, and ship it as base, leaving it up to someone stateside to convert to hcl salt (any idiot will do, you can even use citric acid and convert to citrate salt, which is water soluble- don't use lemon/lime juice like on tv/movies, they carry a nasty fungus). Back to the smell of drug users- a heroin user (in texas it'll be tar- contrary to popular belief tar can be insanely pure. Black tar when dried out becomes almost crystalline, like obsidian. It's not gooey, it fractures like glass or crystalline material. I've seen batches certified @ 93%. So- it's hard to cut (adulterate) a piece of black glass with benadryl, talcum, etc. You know it's of relatively high purity. Alot of folks think their pristine white powder out of asia is more pure, but we all know how easy it is to cut pristine white powder with other pristine looking white powder thats inert- look in any cupboard for a multitude of choices. Of course it's become popular (and profitable) to take black tar and turn it into "mexican brown"- which is taking a block of tar, a bunch of white powder (often diphenhydramine (benadryl), since the antihistamine enhances the drowsy feeling, and also protects a little from the horrific histamine flash of heroin and morphine. This histamine flash is why it's an urban myth that someone bangs H once and is a lifelong addict- you have to get used to the burning/itchy face&skin. With time it goes away- kinda like the nausea of first time smokers. Back to the "smell" of those on H - due to the fact that they are blowing off excess acetic anhydride, they smell of vinegar (acetic acid). Theres no nice sugary or cinnamon smell. Vinegar & BO (sometimes the histamine flash makes ya sweat).
Now, there are a couple other potential drug tie-ins. Back before they started cracking down on large shipments of ether into central/south american countries, it was the preferred solvent for coke (and meth). Someone blowing off ether would have a sickly sugary smell on their breath and sweat- particularly if they're banging the stuff. Chloroform is also sweet, but I don't know if it was ever popular in coke production. Dichloromethane is sweet too. I never noticed any chloroform coke. Many IV users of coke & meth were just as fond of the solvent flash from the injection as they were from the actual drug. but- since they cracked down, gasoline is now the preferred solvent- usually leaded. It's a nasty, dirty solvent flash, and unless you've got the equipment (and enough of the stuff to bother doing it to) it's a real pain to get gasoline out of your coke. Gasoline is a mixture of a bunch of fractions that evap at different temps, and there's still a nasty residue. Oh, and that overpriced "pink peruvian flake"- it's pink because of the gasoline.
One final possibility before I have to go be productive- meth. There was a massive amount of meth around in the mid 90's (and I remember listening to Pepper on the radio when this stuff was around), that when pure (before it was cut) would go from snow white to pink to red to blood red as the solvents evaporated off, and then as it "aged". Perhaps a product of oxidation. Also, as the HI/P meth technique became popular, crappy chemists would get lazy and often there were specks of red phos in the final product. These red products could account for the "cinnamon". Chloroform/DCM/ether are/were (now they're all watched so "mom&pop labs" use cheaper, crappier solvents) all preferred solvents for the speed synths- so there were alot of sweet smelling tweakers blowing off those solvents. Also, as a stimulant user forgets to eat and they burn through the bodys supply of glycogen, they start burning fat and blowing off ketones- also sickly sweet smelling.
My guess is that the BHS were speaking metaphorically. Trying to make sense of an artists, or poets, work never really gets you anywhere. It's impossible to objectively interpret work that is clearly a product of subjective experiences- and when we try to, we project our subjectivity upon it, even when we don't mean to. The song even tells us this.
"You never know just how you look
Through other people's eyes"
(in case this pops up in the NSA/DEA data mining- don't worry guys, you already caught, filleted, and fried this fish)
kool song | Reviewer: Victor | 9/5/08
I've read everyones idea on what they think the song means. Everyone has there own way of what they think songs mean. To me, yes it appears the song is about death and the way people waste away their lives. Heroin though? i dunno. It seems that the chorus is more about how when he can see things clearly he realizes his own bullshit. Think about it. It's whatever you want to relate it to.
sugar and spice | Reviewer: Pierrot The Clown | 9/4/08
seems likely that the Cinnamon and sugary refers to girls and the old rhyme regarding sugar and spice and all things nice. intertextual references. aha.
this fits the context of the verse and also the title of the song.
Word man. | Reviewer: F1uSh | 8/24/08
this song is very good. it has many ways it can be analyzed. i see it as a song that describes reckless teen habits and their obsession with youth. this could be the excuse to their recklessness. it also gives me the idea that the song explains being drunk. "wondering what you look like through other people's eyes" refers to how you appear when your drunk. the fountain being a double meaning of "youth" or booze. either way its a good song :)
Moments of Peeked Awareness | Reviewer: Anonymous | 8/10/08
The lyrics of the verses list ten characters and describes how each either dies or escapes a brush with death. The incidents, whether brought about by idiotic recklessness or meaningless bad luck, finds the victim romanced or invigorated by facing death.
The lyrics of the chorus mention vivid sense memories of close physical human contact, but center on moments painful self-consciousness when one looks back and realizes that one's self-image at the time was not being shared.
The relationship between the lyrics and title is not made clear, nor is the exact connection between the different types of peeked awareness presented in the different sections.
found something out | Reviewer: Buckwheat | 7/20/08
So, I was on here reading everyone's reviews about the cinnamon and Saugary part awhile back and didn't know whether to think it was heroine (like some of you said) or what; this question was soon after answered for me.
A buddy and me were out playing frisbee golf in our local park and just happen to be drinking while we were playing; one of the local pro's walked up to say hi and when he got over close to us he said "shew, boys! Thats some strong cinnamon you all are wearing today" I asked him why he said that and he informed us that Cinnamon is what the old timers (he is about 55) would always say the could smell on someones breath when they were referring to alcohol. (or in the songs case, what they could taste on their lips)
As for the sugary, well, we use to refer to cocaine as sugary and Im sure that there are also people who use that word to talk about H ... or it could just be a really really good grateful dead reference :)
