The Reviews about Lover I Don't Have To Love (page 1/ 7)

I always saw that line as just expressing the tendency he has to choose other people who are hurting as badly as him, needing any sort of acknowledgement they can get. The verses that follow sort of explain that point... "Said I liked your shoes, you said 'thanks, can I follow you'" She didn't want to give her name, didn't 'care to know who had been you before.' The song has such a desperate feeling. And I think the "I want a boy who's so drunk he doesn't talk" merely refers to his confusion and desperation

I have a couple questions... | Reviewer: Kyle Martin | 10/15/09

I don't think this line is shallow, but I am confused at when he says that " I picked you out of a crowd" is he talking about because he is famous he can just pick anyone? and when he says "I want a boy who's so drunk he doesn't talk", is he bi? or what is he talking about???

To Veritable Goddess | Reviewer: Livy | 8/30/09

Date rape? Are you serious? Have you read or watch an interviews with Connor? I don't think he wants to hook up or rape any of his fans. & I think every Connor write is very original. He has a voice & sound that can carry over an genre of music. & That's what makes him a great musician. & His lyrics are great. Deep, meaningful. I don't think he's the type to write about raping people.

Shallow...not | Reviewer: Judy | 5/23/09

If you are reading these lyrics on the most shallow level, just looking at the very exterior, yes they will seem shallow. However, if you really look and you really put all of the lyrics together it becomes something completely different.
Shallow if you are looking at it on a shallow level. Open up your minds.

Lover I Don't Have To Love | Reviewer: chelsiee | 5/5/09

Listening to Bright Eyes and Conor Oberst always gets me thinking and quite honestly it astonishes me how honest the lyrics are. In my opinion, they seem to be lyrics that anyone can relate to, no matter what. Lover I Don't Have To Love, in particular, brings up a lot of emotions for me while I'm listening to it. I see it as being too emotionally damaged to love, as do a lot of other people, and that's something that I'm terrified of. I don't want to feel too emotionally damaged to be with someone and listening to this song makes everything better for a while. I don't know why.

where are the chemicals? | Reviewer: Anonymous | 12/30/08

I either cant connect to people or they cant connect to me...either way i understand. I'm the girl that's too sad to give a fuck...this isnt about a one night stand, it's about a whole life of them...this isnt shallow or degrading to mankind, it's honest. It's real. It's sad. It's life.

I think most of you need to re-read these lyrics or something. | Reviewer: Anonymous | 12/8/08

Well, to those of you so utterly critical of this song, I say this:
Love isn't for everyone. Some people, Like Conor Oberst, are far too emotionally damaged to open up in that way and love someone else. This song isn't about a one night stand. Look deeper, would you? The majority of it, yes, is about just wanting someone to pass the time with. To be quite honest, that's exactly how I am. And i'm a girl (ooooh, shocking). But the song is more than just being unable to love. It's about how much love can hurt you. Hence, the last "stanza". I know I avoid love and real relationships because it's more hurtful than anything, to me. I truly love these lyrics. They aren't "shallow", like some of you claim. In fact, to that I'd say you are simply narrow minded. Get off your high-horse and realize that some people out there are just way too emotionally damaged to have, or even want, love.

response to "Veritable Goddess" | Reviewer: Ashley | 11/12/08

this song really writes about pain that Conor Oberst went through in his life. i think he's a poetic genius, and the things that he wrote about in "Lover I Don't Have To Love" really get down to the controversy that one feels when in love. taking a different approach to the lyrics might allow you to see if from a different angle, or might perhaps bring sympathy for his pain or respect for his poetry, other than downing someone's attempt at ridding themselves of stress and pain. downing their thoughts does nothing. if you have a negative opinion, don't dumb it down with vulgar language, don't leave anything at all, or stop being so narrow minded. being respectful really will get you farther in life.

I'm sure I'll be hung for this opinion, lol. | Reviewer: Veritable Goddess | 9/5/08

It's song that's about fucking insecure people because they have no attachments that can hurt.
He details picking out a target, he wants a girl who's too sad to give a fuck. Or even a boy who's so drunk that he doesn't talk.
Date rape any one?
What has basically been done in bringing up the band, is that he's giving hope to his depressed washed out fan base that he might give preference to anyone and fuck them passionately at a venue. If they catch his eye.
I suppose if you are into that sort of thing it's a genius move because hundreds of people will go to hear the music and to be the "lover he doesn't have to love".
The song itself is unoriginal, derivative bullshit.
Its strong points lie in its haunting melody and discordant singing that many people can't help but like; in addition to the lyrics that appeal to baser, shallower side of it's fan's psyche.
Come on Betty Serveert, the fucking O.C.!
Nuff said.

then hurt me | Reviewer: jacque | 7/13/08
