I don't think this song is about somebody cheating. I think it is about somebody dying. That is what I got from it.
"The phone slips from a loose grip.
Words were missed then some apology
like I didn't want to tell you this
it's just some guys she has been hanging out with
oh I don't know the past couple of weeks I guess.
Thank you and hang up the phone.
Let the funeral start.
Hear the casket close.
Let's pin split-black ribbon onto your overcoat.
Still laughter pours from under doors in this house.
I don't understand that sound no more.
It seems artificial like a T.V. set."
and then when he says
"You would always be there,
well where are you now?"
I don't know I am just guessing, but it sounds right.
oh joy. | Reviewer: A new day | 10/16/07
lol.
I had this song blasting in my room the other day and my dad walked in.. i expected him to tell me to turn that emotional racket off like he describes all my music, the bastard.. though he told me to play this song again.
This Song's fantastic.
You're killing me Conor, you're relly killing me..

Favourite Bright Eyes song ever.
Captured me the first time i heard it.
"But now we speak with ruined tongues
And the words we say aren’t meant for anyone.
It’s just a mumbled sentence to
A passing acquaintance,
But there was once you."
THEY MAKE ME WANNA PUNCH MYSELF IN THE FACE.
Man, I love this song. | Reviewer: Laurel | 8/11/07
This was the first Bright Eyes song I'd ever heard, and I still think it's one of my favorites. Beautiful, emotional, amazing. The lyrics are too damn awesome. *love*

Oh. My. God. | Reviewer: Anisa | 7/3/06
Bright Eyes= briliant! Conor Oberst may not be the best singer, but he sings with such passion... this song makes me tear up everytime I hear it. His lyrics are so raw and genuine. This song is beautiful, but devastating in the same way. Amazing.
The Song.. | Reviewer: Kate | 2/24/06
the song is just...epic, i don't know.
there's something about all of Conor Oberst's songs, ithink it's because they actually mean something & they're so original & people can relate to them. which is most important.
and this song in particular is very relateable.
if i'm correct, i think it was about a girlfriend he had and the first verse seems to tell me she cheated on him, i don't know. but then he became okay about it and i think they became like...loose friends.
i can relate to it because it reminds me of this really shitty guy that i dated, haha.. especially "you said you hate my suffering, and you understood & you'd take care of me. you said you'd always be there, well where are you now?"
hah. but yes, this song is very special to me & i love it =]
xx
