The Reviews about Haligh, Haligh, A Lie, Haligh (page 1/ 3)

it's about a woman cheating on him.
"it's some guy she's been hanging out with, i don't know the last couple weeks i guess."
i think that refers to a friend or someone seeing them together and relaying the message.
and then it follows: "Thank you and hang up the phone.
Let the funeral start, hear the casket close.
Let’s pin split-black ribbon to your overcoat."
referring to his own death, or a piece of him dying. like "oh, it's all over now! i might as well be fucking dead!"
i know i am right because of this: "But now we speak with ruined tongues
And the words we say aren’t meant for anyone.
It’s just a mumbled sentence to
A passing acquaintance,
But there was once you."
she's obviously still alive, because he still speaks to her as a "passing acquaintance." therefore, she cannot be dead.
still in love | Reviewer: kaka | 1/21/09
ive been listening to this song for two or three years now,
and i still cant get over it.
reading some of these reviews, new and old,
its totally hitting home.
i think im going through this whole situation of the girl leaving [except opposite for me...the boys leaving]
i dont see the funeral as literal, but a metaphor,
and i agree with the fact taht he probably wouldnt be as angry if it was death.
unless she killed herself.

This song is not about someone dying.
I'll go for Kristen's analyze.
He's sad, angry, empty & lonely cuz of the breakup with the girl. And the feeling of being left is what he describes in this song.

i don't think that this song is about death at all. i think that it is about a break-up for sure. she broke his heart and nows shes with someone else and he heard about it from someone that called him and he feels like he is dying and is suffering. its like a "funeral" for him but its not literally. he probably contemplated suicide. this is evident when he says "or just not live. but do you want that?" like he is so lost and does not know what to do without her and has thought about killing himself as an alternative. but he also hates her now and would never take her back. "the choses were given and now you must live them" ..like she must live in her new life with that new guy because he wont take her back.
i don't know for sure. conor is the only one that really knows what the song means, thats just what i took from it. its an amazing song, like all of his songs because his lyrics are completely brilliant.
Meaning | Reviewer: Jacob | 11/18/08
The song is about a man who just recently broke up with a woman and he couldn't handle it and he killed himself. The lyrics "Now a lock of hair you said would prove Our love would never die.
Well, ha ha ha." means that she once told him that their love would never die. But she left him and he killed himself. And that's the ha ha ha.
"And i sing and sing of awful things."

I think that the gf dying is a good idea but I always heard the song as being about a breakup. The phone slips from his hands when he hears the gf is seeing someone else and it is his own funeral he is talking about. He is asking her where she is now because she is with another guy. I just don't think he would be so clearly angry at her if she had in fact died.
tis about | Reviewer: paul | 4/13/08
tis about a girl moving on and he hears about her moving on from him from someone else "its just some guy shes been hanging out with... i didnt want to tell her you this". its def not about someone dying...the funeral scene is just a metaphor for the dead/dying love that he depended on because she "understood his suffering" and "she'd always be there for him" and these are the lies (hence the title)the "awful lie".
...the emotion of hearing this news is very well encapsulated wiht his lyrics "The phone slips from a loose grip.
Words were missed, then some apology" Its like a smack in the face ...u can't say anything and u dont hear what the person telling u this is saying to u.

This is the first Bright Eyes song I've heard. My friend Tessa introduced me to their music and loved them ever since.
At the time my gf was cheating on me and I really related to this song (Even though I agree with lux, aeterna, on it being about a gf dieing)
There music is so emotional and I'm an emotional person. lol

wow this song is so goooooood. i love his voice, he puts so much emotion into his singing. the lyrics! they're just so creative and true, how does he come up with this. i love when he says 'the plans were never finalized, but left to hang like yarn and twine, dangling before my eyes.' it just explains so perfectly how it feels when ur future with someone falls apart. </3

this song is my favorite song. the metaphorical meaning behind every line is practically mesmorizing.
"As you tear and tear your hair from roots.
Of that same head you’ve twice removed
Now a lock of hair you said would prove
Our love would never die."
but really; this song applies to every happening in life, death, companionship, love, suffering numbness and loneliness. my favorite line of all
"He says the choices were given
And now, you must live them
Or just not live,
But do you want that?"
make your choices, some choices are final, you cant take them back.
