Why is it that every discussion about Conor's lyrics turn into a debate about what is "emo", and if he is in fact "emo"? Really...the whole thing just discredits him as the amazing poet and songwriter that he is. Sure, he has emotionally charged lyrics, but so do the likes of Bob Dylan, Leonard Cohen, Thom Yorke, Morrisey, Neil Young...the list goes on and on.
Emotion (whether happiness, confusion, love, angst) within art, if it is genuine, is not a bad thing. This is why the very concept of the modern day "emo" music scene irks me.
Moving on, this is probably my favourite song off of one of my favourite albums. Caleb is right to say that a lot of it deals with discussing the belief in god and predetermined fate, destiny, etc. Without going into specific examples, towards the end of the song it hints about accepting life for what it is and not worrying so much about what will happen.
Anyway, beautiful use of imagery to pull you into the song. The ending feels bittersweet to me, personally, but I see how some could view it as optimistic, while others bleak.

Guys its about the people who fake being a christan. At the beginning its says they're are angels but they are not real angels. You see and the the second stanza cause i relate song and poetry(i'm not emo most people would call me a redneck but i know good music when i hear it) that you can change in the most absurd places. But at the end does it matter at all what we are. Cause there nothing but you and GOD!(also i'm not a southern baptist i have my own views on God)

If only people would listen to the song.. I'm not "emo" and I love bright eyes... If anyone actually listens to this song they would realize its not depressing... Its a pretty up beat song. I love bright eyes and most of there music is really upbeat.. I also love his not so upbeat songs.. Whatever mood your in youll find that bright eyes has a song for you.
Ignorant people. | Reviewer: Perpetual Mess. | 7/1/08
All of you who classify this as "emo" or anything
remotely close to that need to rethink what it is
you're saying. "Emo" is a genre of music. A genre
of music that has seemingly been shaped into another useless lable people like to point out, pick and give to someone. Connor talks about life, and the things wrong with life. The things beautiful about life, the simplicity in it all. Honesty hurts. Sadist opinions hurt but why can't you just leave it at that without classifying such things because that's what you're superficial mind needs to do. Get a life & live it. If you can be happy with simple things, you're clearly ignorant and too caught up the materialistic life style around you. Grow up & look at life in someone else's point of view. Empathy may be the answer in the end. All of you are starting to sound condecsending.
I hope you're listening. | Reviewer: scum. | 4/12/08
Haha. Listen,
Emo shouldn’t be classified as a music genre.
It's something that offers impact on someone’s frame of mind gathered from the artists intentions towards the song.
Each form of music, including Conor’s is emotional. There’s no objection.
Music can infect our moods, make us move and weaken our conscious, well towards mine anyway.
Drowning in melody, it’s beautiful.
People who whine about, Conor, being, “depressing”, should really go head but a bullet.
He’s the most sentimental towards making music, and I fucking love it.
So go listen to your cheerful tunes that have insignificant meaning.
You know, that type of shit that most people call “music”.
Because this, this is real music.
Don't You DARE | Reviewer: Jessica | 3/30/08
When you people get the right to classify and judge the music of someone like conor oberst, then you can talk. The person who called this emo? What is wrong with you? this is as far from emo as you can get, even you classify emo as its literal interpretation, emotional. Emotional is close to being hysterical. This isn't emotional nor hysterical in any sense. When i listen to it i may feel sad but I don't think conor writes it to make sadness or to portray his- he does it to give insight into life, it's purely observational.
conor is a lyrical scientist, observing life in detail. And he must include the sad details.
Don't classify this song, please. You're ruining life for the rest of us. You're entitled to your opinion but you have no right to call this emo, especially when you don't understand emo OR the actual song. Sorry for the rant :)
beautiful. | Reviewer: Jen | 1/22/08
Conor is simply amazing. He doesn't make whiny emo crap. Your modern 'emo' music is described in Art is Hard by Cursive. It's people faking pain to sell records. With Bright Eyes you can hear the raw emotion portrayed in every line. This isn't some bullshit to make money, this is someone using music to cope with their own pain and suffering. Conor is an absolute genius and is one of the best song writers ever.

Step out of your egocentric box and realize that not everyone has a happy life like you. People suffer, and for many, life is suffering. Why condemn the sadness? No one is telling you to listen to this- go listen to some happy music if that's what makes you feel good. But besides that, Conor Oberst is a fucking poet.
Psh! | Reviewer: Courtney | 9/4/07
Oh, Jonas.
"blah blah blah emo sucks stop crying be happy blah."
You sound like all of the other automatons in the new movement of hating "emo" and anything remotely resembling it. I wouldn't classify Bright Eyes under that, anyway. Maybe if you took time to try and understand the lyrics, they'd mean something to you other than "DUHRR, HE'S ALL SAD ABOUT LIFE."
Condemning something just because it's "emo" is just as bad as liking something just because it's "emo." Catch my drift?
At least he's writing about something other than dancing in a club with girls, or how his girlfriend broke up with him and that sucked.
I found it was hopeful, at the end, anyway.
Perfect EMO lyrics | Reviewer: Jonas | 7/27/07
Dark, depressing--what else could you want? Emo is love (or hate or anger or suicidal). Blechhh. Spit it all out and be happy about something people! Life is good if you look at it that way. These lyrics are rabidly depressing. They are contagious! Stay away from them.
