i love all bright eyes' songs.. im not emo..or near emo.. not even like punk or anything.. my friends think im weird to like it tho. but whatever, i love the lyrics of all the songs.. i get depressed easily, and just listen to his songs. helps get me by. who cares what the classification is? i bet conor could care less..
Love this song | Reviewer: Merricat | 6/24/09
To me this song is about faith; the loss of it, the emotional cost of that loss, and its subsequent, if incomplete and tenuous, recovery. This is an issue that most, if not all, of us have dealt with at one time or another. The last verse is a beautiful portrait of existential joy- I can see the colors of the trees and paint in the details. Conor Oberst is not just a songwriter but a true poet.
Heh | Reviewer: opp | 5/27/09
Can everyone take a f'ing breath?
I really like bright eyes. But stop acting as if someone killed your children. As i understood it someone thought the song was kinda emo. Fair enough. Perhaps not emo as in emotional hardcore or whatever, but conor can be quite depressing, yea.
Can all conor loving fangirls just chill the fuck out? It's the internet, don't expect everyone to agree with you.
Just shut up. | Reviewer: Corinne | 5/25/09
I'm on this website to read and discuss the meaning of the song, not Conor's stereotype.
This song is bare and naked in all its glory sitting in front of us, but Conor is not. We are not to say whether he truly fits the stereotype of "emo" until you too, have seen and lived every second, every thought, in every pain, happiness and setting in which he himself has. You dont know him personally. He does. He can decide who and i guess, in this pathetic, shallow classification, what he is as well.
Furthermore, im damn sick of hearing about how bad it is to be "emo".
If it is who we are then thats it. The human mind is beautiful and so is every personality that it creates.
This song on the other hand, is open for interpretation. We have access to the words and music completely, so it is open for interpretation. Though it is true that we may never see it the way Conor does, the same is true for himself; We will never know who he is even if we had been there for every minute of his life. So just shut up.

"emo" is not a goddamn lable you can put on people. nobody is "emo". before you even ever say the goddamn word look up what bands are truely emo... and what the genre really was. retards. most shit, today, no matter how whiny, or in your eyes "emo" they are, are just not emotive hardcore in any way. I don't understand how you can call yourself a fan of any type of music and not educate yourself about music.
some people suck at life. | Reviewer: marta | 2/9/09
STOP TALKING ABOUT WHETHER THIS SONG IS EMO AND ACTUALLY DISCUSS IT. here i am, trying to read about what others think about what it means, and all i see is "it's emo" "it's not emo."
SO ANYWAYS... i'm thinking this song is about breaking all of the cliches society has built (the media telling the truth, there being no planets to align, the guard really telling him that he is "freezing," not free). anyone else have thoughts on this?
personally, i believe that conor oberst and bright eyes aren't emo. but whatever. argue away and waste your time.
Hmm | Reviewer: Conor | 1/26/09
Why does it matter if someone calls Conor Oberst emo? If this is emo, then so be it; I like it and I think that's all that really matters. I could care less whether or not other people enjoy or even respect his music. Its speaks to me, and makes me think about things. This is how I would define good music.
Ah jeez | Reviewer: violet | 11/5/08
Why is it that every discussion about Conor's lyrics turn into a debate about what is "emo", and if he is in fact "emo"? Really...the whole thing just discredits him as the amazing poet and songwriter that he is. Sure, he has emotionally charged lyrics, but so do the likes of Bob Dylan, Leonard Cohen, Thom Yorke, Morrisey, Neil Young...the list goes on and on.
Emotion (whether happiness, confusion, love, angst) within art, if it is genuine, is not a bad thing. This is why the very concept of the modern day "emo" music scene irks me.
Moving on, this is probably my favourite song off of one of my favourite albums. Caleb is right to say that a lot of it deals with discussing the belief in god and predetermined fate, destiny, etc. Without going into specific examples, towards the end of the song it hints about accepting life for what it is and not worrying so much about what will happen.
Anyway, beautiful use of imagery to pull you into the song. The ending feels bittersweet to me, personally, but I see how some could view it as optimistic, while others bleak.

Guys its about the people who fake being a christan. At the beginning its says they're are angels but they are not real angels. You see and the the second stanza cause i relate song and poetry(i'm not emo most people would call me a redneck but i know good music when i hear it) that you can change in the most absurd places. But at the end does it matter at all what we are. Cause there nothing but you and GOD!(also i'm not a southern baptist i have my own views on God)

If only people would listen to the song.. I'm not "emo" and I love bright eyes... If anyone actually listens to this song they would realize its not depressing... Its a pretty up beat song. I love bright eyes and most of there music is really upbeat.. I also love his not so upbeat songs.. Whatever mood your in youll find that bright eyes has a song for you.
