holier than thou scene kids stfu | Reviewer: aids | 5/28/08

Take the song for what it's worth, interpret it how ever you may wish, that's the beauty about music and art...obviously that beauty is lost on a lot of you...ooooops....just lost some "scene points" i better stfu

does it matter? | Reviewer: stephanie mcauliffe | 4/1/08

The lyrics are beautiful and they obviously were about his grandfather as other people have mentioned and his pain when he received the phone call. But nobody is RIGHT or WRONG in the meaning of this song. Songs and poems mean different things to different people. Most lyrics are written, open to interpretation. The most beautiful lyrics are those that everyone can relate to, and put in to context with their own lives. So whatever he meant when he wrote the lyrics, it does not make others wrong if they saw something different in them.

sorry for how long that was :)

The real meaning... | Reviewer: Justin | 3/4/08

Guernica is in fact a city in Spain, where Jesse was staying at the time, when he received a phone call stating that his GRANDFATHER was in a hospital suffering from lung cancer . Hence...every lyric in the song. GET THE FACTS STRAIGHT.

"I'm not letting you check out
You will beat this starting now"

Great song. | Reviewer: Anonymous | 1/25/08

It's about his grandmother, and its powerful.
"Nobody plans to be half the world away in times like these" ?? duh.
Is this the way a toy feels? that holds meaning, its real,.

Song/City/Painting | Reviewer: Joshua | 12/28/07

I love the song, just like all the rest of the Brand New songs. I'm sure there are a lot of different interpretations, but this is how I read it. Guernica is a city in the northern Basque region of Spain, now called Gernika-Lumo. During the Spanish Civil War, Nazi Fascists launched Operation Rugen against the Spanish Nationalists, bombing the city of Guernica. The air raid was extensive and cause numerous civilian casualties. It is noted historically for the gruesome way the target was non-militaristic, but civilian. Years later, Picasso did a painting of the scene of the bombing of Guernica. The painting is chaotic and sad, depicting the bombing as horrible and gruesome; something no one should have to go through. I think it relates to the song in that it mirrors the way Jesse felt, being in such a helpless and horrible situation. At least, thats my interpretation.

Thanks!

the truth | Reviewer: jenna | 11/27/07

it's about his grandFATHER. he's mentioned it before. his grandfather had lung cancer. he's said it before in interviews.

umm, hello? | Reviewer: a. | 11/25/07

jesse lacey was on tour when he found out his grandmother had cancer... that's what it's about. and yes, guernica is a mural by picasso, but it doesn't have a whole lot to do with the song.

grandmother vs town | Reviewer: david | 11/11/07

Ok, here's my input on the song. Wouldn't it make sense if the song was about the grandmother, and he received the phone call while in the town of Guernica in Spain. Just a thought.
