I view it as a relationship between a guy and a girl they never got past the friend stage. She use to have feelings for him and he lost his shot and did not relize it until she moved on. now he is realizing that she was everything he wanted. thats how i see it at least.

i think that this song is about the stage that comes before the break-up. the point where he messed up and she said that they can try to work it out but its the stage where she is still upset and hurt by whatever it is that he did. He wants it to work out, but he is willing to do anything to make her happy again, even if that means that they have to break up. He doesnt want her to leave but at the same time he wants to know that even though she forgave him, that one day she will forget what happened, because only then can they actually move on and get past it.
this is my all time favourite song, it conveys love in a way that you feel what he is feeling when he sings.
"you are the smell before rain, you are the blood in my veins" the most beautiful part
my thoughts | Reviewer: Anonymous | 9/27/11
in my mind, this song is an epilogue of a relationship between a guy who is trying to grow up and an emotionally damaged girl. i think maybe she they went through a break up, but not after trying to desperately salvage the relationship.
in the end the girl hates her ex, but it's not a mutual hate. he just wants her to be happy. this song is him basically saying to her that he knows that even though she eventually moved on from him, she is still obviously hurting from it and holds something against him. he's trying to tell her that he wants her to stop hurting, and that maybe one day they can be at peace with each other.

"Let your beauty unfold
Pale white like the skin
Stretched over your bones
Spring keeps you ever close
You are second hand smoke
You are so fragile and thin
Standing trial for your sins"
Its about this girl/guy with an eating disorder who wants to get ride of it but cant
"Holding onto yourself the best you can
You are the smell before the rain
You are the blood in my veins"
Anywho thats how I see it.

imo this song is the point where a relationship could go either way. it sounds like he cheated on her 'you can tell me how vile already know that I am' and she sounds like she moved on later in the song, 'I'm glad that you can forgive, only hoping as time goes you can forget' by the end of the song she's called too many favors and he's now fed up of being made to repay for his mistakes 'you say you wanted a solution but you just wanted to be missed' he doesn't want to get played along but he loves her so much. I do love this song. let me know what you think firstname.lastname@example.org

It's easily about a break up. I was with this girl, on and off for about 9 months. She hurt me as I hurt her. But we were both knew to relationships so we both easily made mistakes. In the end it wasn't a mutual end, rather a nasty one and we haven't spoken for a few weeks.
She told me how heartless and vile I was and I accepted that.
She was a beautiful girl and she used it for other boys.
She was fragile and thin
Songs like this make me feel a bit better to know I'm not the only boy in the world who feels like this. Gets me through the hard times. Ahh well, we learn from our mistakes an move on eh?

I dont know what the writer meant by the lyrics he used in this song, all i know is that its an amazing song. And that it speaks to a part of me that im not even sure i had.. Awesome song, awesome band.
what it means... to me. | Reviewer: Anonymous | 6/6/10
it doesn't matter to me who wrote the lyrics, they are amazing, and their power are only improved by jesse's voice and emotion and the background music.
but i digress.
i adore the lyrics. it's an interesting perspective on a breakup- to me at least, it seems as if its a direct appeal to a girl whose heart he broke unintentionally. He had no desire to hurt her, but it just wasnt working out.
he says "A crown of gold
A heart that's harder than stone
And it hurts a whole lot
But it's missed when it's gone"
to me the crown of gold may have been a metaphor for selfishness, a heart harder than stone maybe a loss of feeling in the relationship. but then he's saying that even though it was hurting him to be in the relationship, it hurts worse now that he made the wrong decision, especially since they lost all connection whatsoever- they can't even be friends, and he's trying to do all he can to make it right for her because he feels bad about the pain he gave her.
regardless, this song is amazing and probably my favorite brand new song.

i dated this guy and i am in love with him and loved him but i have no choice but to move on because he ended things with me and this song is just great i liste to it all the time i wish he really would "move out of the state
You can keep to yourself I'll keep out of your way" cause i see him and it all comes back and all i can think of is how much i want to be with him and how much i love him even though i know he doesnt love me or wants to be with me. Thats why no guys for me for a while.

I've been on the end where i was the one dumped, i listened to this song forever, but i noticed that possibly it could be interpreted either way being dumped or getting dumped, some lyrics point one way some lyrics point another...
"If it makes you less sad
I will die by your hand
I hope you find out what you want
I already know what I am
And if it makes you less sad
We'll start talking again
And you can tell me how vile
I already know that I am"
can be said as if u were dumped, he/she hates themselves for it, and u want to make them feel better

Even if Jessie Lacey didn't write these lyrics..the guitar is perfect for the way this song is. So congratulations to Brand New for this song..it can be interpreted in a lot of ways, but reading the "everything" post..being on the opposite end of a past relationship like that, it makes me feel like a douche for not being able to forget.

You really don't understand what music is about if you think that is the meaning of the song. That is the inspiration for the song. The meaning is the experience you get from the piece. But you are too logical to pick up on that. This is art, created to bring forward emotion, and with the intention of listeners being able to relate in some way. If nobody could relate to it, it wouldn't be as sucessful

i think the most heart breaking ending to a relationship is when the feeling isnt mutual, in this song, he has to make the hard decision to end the relationship, and it hurt the girl alot, but rather than hold on to love that has faded, he had to end things, and he dosent like himself for it, and tries to make it as easy as possible on the girl, letting her make the desicions, most of them except the fact that hes made up his mind and its over, she can talk to him if she wants, she can tell him to leave and he will, hes trying to spare her more torment, "if it makes you less sad i will die by your hand", it would never be on her terms but, it will soften the blow, he hates himself for having to do it, "tell me how vile i already know that i am" also she might have been more insecure in herself than him, i went through something similar, thats why i was attacted to the song i think, i have always been a little insecure, and my girlfrind was very confident and strong, it must have been hard for her to have to hurt someone so sensitive, like it must have been hard for the boy in the song. She still loving him forgave him, not being bitter and understanding that sometimes you have to let go of someone is very hard, but honestly for the best, in time he wants her to forget, may be abit of a hope to far but it shows how desperatly sorry he is. x
just some babble. | Reviewer: katie | 11/4/09
This song is so self descriptive. Even with out reading the lyrics, it's almost hard not to dive into the emotion of the piece. It's such a torn heart that seems to come through. It's that feeling of knowing how much you care for someone, and how badly you would love to fix their life, and to make them happy, yet you can only find yourself hurting them more.
"If it makes you less sad
I'll move out of the state
You can keep to yourself
I'll keep out of your way"
Clearly this is stating what I mentioned above. Just that even though you don't want to leave or be away from someone, you know that you are going to have to come up with the strength to leave them because it is for the better. That in itself can hold so much more meaning than holding on to a relationship that is hopeless. This song was recently 'dedicated' to me by this kid. I chose to let him keep pouring salt in my wounds.' Its a sucky situation on both ends when you have someone that you care so deeply about, yet are rendered helpless to the feelings of misery that come along with the relationship.

For all you dumbasses who think that this is about Lacey and an ex, you're wrong. Lacey didn't write the lyrics. He and Brian Lane, did indeed write the music to it, and bought the lyrics from a man that attended Cornell with them named Eric Bolin. It's about a girl that Bolin was dating, but wanted to break up with. He snuck to her house one night to break up with her, hence the line "as I sneak to your bed to pour salt in your wounds". She told him that he was only making it worse by coming over and breaking up with her. That he just needed to leave. Not ever bother her again. There. Now you can have a little taste of the background of the lyrics. Talk about that.
