what i think it means.. | Reviewer: Anonymous | 2/1/09
he loves her but they're being forced to break up. and he was the one who had to do it. he HAD to. "i hope you find out what you want.. i already know what i am" they're still in love and he loves her and wants her to forgive him for doing it but theres nothing he can do about it. thats why its so sad.
Sad. | Reviewer: Anonymous | 1/2/09
I always thought this is what my ex felt for me. He cheated and asked to be forgived. So the line "glad that you can forgive, only hoping as time goes, you can forget." I forgave him, but I never let it go completely. And I was so fucking sad, but he'd be willing to do anything to make me less sad. Everything in this song reminds me of him.

I immediately loved this song from the first time I heard it when the album came out simply for its simplistic yet atmospheric melody. Then after a bit of a messy break up I came across "every picture that you paint, I will paint myself out" on one of her online profiles...then the meaning of the song hit me. Whether he's writing it because of what happened to him or what he did to another person isnt the focal point, its a song about painfully loosing someone. Cause unless your a complete jerk...a break up hurts...doesnt matter if ur getting dumped or vice versa...if ther was love there and now its not, then your loosing something. I love this song, and i play it on guitar and sing it all the time...

This is a song that reminds me of everything that happened to me with Matt, it is an exact description of our relationship and the fall out. It is the most depressing song I've ever heard and yet the most alluring. I love this song but it makes me remember everything I've tried to forget, I guess you just never can forget some people.. He'll always be there.
it sounds to me... | Reviewer: Steph | 11/19/08
I think the song is about a relationship gone awry. The mention of her "standing trial" for her sins and of how "vile" he is leads me to believe that in one way or another, they were both responsible for the downfall of the relationship(although I do believe he was initially to blame). Possibly a situation of infidelity where he has cheated and she is struggling with trusting him again. The bitterness and inability to let go of the past hurt would explain the 7th and 8th lines. It is also evident in the second paragraph describing his attempt to change and her inability to let go. The lines "When I sneak to your bed and pour salt in your wounds" seem to reinforce the concept of her struggling with what he did-as if it haunts her dreams. The chorus leads me to believe that she is hesitant to leave him only because of the fact that she is more afraid of the being alone than remaining in a relationship with someone she can't trust. There is an odd comfort that comes from the familiar-whether detrimental to your well-being or not. It feels safer.
Keep in mind that this is just my personal interpretation of the song. Because of the fact that most people's interpretations of lyrics and poems tend to be extremely biased-this could be entirely wrong. I just connected the song to the most fitting and logical situation I have come in contact with.

my girlfriend just broke up with me after 7 months because she saw one of her old boyfriends and realized that shes still in love with him. so the line that really gets to me is, "I hope you find what you want. I already know what I am" its like shes confused and doesn't know what she wants so she just destroys everything
my story... | Reviewer: Draco | 9/26/08
I know this songs about a guy hurting a girl... but when I first heard this song was after I heard my boyfriend really, really bad. I knew before I did it, during and after that he'd be hurt but I kept doing it because I was an adict... I heard this song and it was everything I was feeling and trying to get across to him.
I played the song for him and he said he understood... we're still together, going on 6 years now... this song didn't save us though. WE saved us with a looot of hard work... this song just sums it up pretty damn good.

my ex broke up with me on our anniversary. and we were broken up for a week or so then we wanted to talk about everything that had happened. we got back together. he was taking me home that night that we got back together and he played me this song. i took it as an im sorry for hurting you, please forgive me, i still love you. yet he broke my heart again after another couple weeks?
wither way i always took this song as an asking for an appology and a second chance that they probably dont deserve.
