This song is about the end of a relationship. The ship itself symbolizes the relationship, and the sinking of it means that the relationship is ending. He's saying "i know that this is what you want a funeral keeps both of us apart" & means that he knows its what she wants..that the death of their relationship will keep them away from each other. He needs her like water in his lungs, which means that he neither needs her or doesn't need her..she's simply part of what once was

Its beautiful | Reviewer: ann | 5/18/07

Honestly, the song is so abstractly written that you can take it however you like. That sounds wrong, but its kind of what makes it great. I prefer to think its about how unpredictable relationships are, not just love relationships but all. Life changes and so do people. Not everything survives. Its a real work of poetry, especially with the music. You can hear what he's feeling in every word he says, something I've come to expect from this band.

metaphor | Reviewer: Anonymous | 5/10/07

i know its been said, but i think this song came from the metaphor of a relationship being "on the rocks". Jesse has decided to use a literal interpretation of this metaphor when writing this song

need you like water in my lungs | Reviewer: elliot david | 5/7/07

i think the line i need you like water in my lungs means he loves her wand needs her but he knows tht having her was killing him!

actually... | Reviewer: kacey | 4/14/07

the phrase "i need you like water in my lungs" is refering to the girl, not jesse..

Jason: The last track on your new CD .. holds more meaning to me then possibly any song ever written -- it truly is classic (especially with my going off to college, leaving my GF and friends behind) -- can you tell me the story behind it?

Jesse: yeah, i originally wrote that song for my friend Peter. He's one of the only kids who really recognizes the way we, as well as all our friends, have changed in the last couple years. It's something we used to sit up and talk about all night. But also, about the time i was writing it i had just started seeing my girlfriend. And as it turned out i remember alot of people giving her alot shit for wanting to be with me. But it was only cause they were being spiteful, and old, and envious. Cause they are just boring people. That's where the last lines in the song came from. Those are my favorite.

the whole songs about when jesse went on a rafting trip and one of the guys he was with broke his leg and they had to rush him to the hospital and stuff. there's a lot of other metaphors that are open to interpretation but thats what he originally wrote the song about.

I need you like water in my lungs | Reviewer: love-samy-stery | 2/13/07

I feel like the phrase "I need you like water in my lungs" is not nearly saying that he doesnt need her anymore, but, when you drown, its almost like you want to breathe in that water, even though you know it will kill you. So, he's saying that he shouldn't need her, but he keeps 'breathing' her in.

Beautiful Song | Reviewer: Joey | 1/27/07

In this song, Jesse is using a ship in distress to relate to the condition of his relationship with his love. The easiest way to understand this song is to simply think of the (vessel/ship) as their relationship.
