i always knew there was something of a feud between the bands, but until you expanded upon what i knew by saying that, i haven't really researched it. here's the story, or what i've found:

Lead singer Jesse Lacey had been best friends with then Taking Back Sunday guitarist/singer John Nolan (who has left the band) since grade school. Jesse's girlfriend cheated on him with John. John called Jesse, and the last words that Jesse spoke to him were, "You're as subtle as a brick on the small of my back so lets end this call and end this conversation" and hung up. That was the last time they spoke and then years later Brand New added it as lyrics to their song "Seventy Times 7" which is about what happened and his feelings toward Nolan. Taking Back Sunday then came out with the song "There's No 'I' In Team," which expresses John's side of the story. In "There's No 'I' In Team," he says, "What I can't regret, can't you just forget it?" which shows how he wants to get past was happened between them. if this is indeed another song about this bitter bond between him and John, i think i'm right.
still love this song, thanks for the comment Grant.

Life... | Reviewer: Anonymous | 10/20/07

all of your ideas sound great, but I think the important part of it is that it's like all of their other songs...giving a new perspective on how you should look at life...

I was wondering though, at live performances, what is played immediately prior/leading into/an extended intro to this song? I was at detroit last night and it was amazing.

Agreed | Reviewer: Grant F. | 10/17/07

Yea Jason H. I think you have a valid point...if you know any of the story that took place between Taking Back Sunday and Brand New, then this could easily be one of the metaphors tossed back and forth lyrically between the bands. Then again it could be about grandmothers and a Guatamalan pool boy named Kyle. Good call though.

What the song is about. | Reviewer: i'm right | 10/16/07

The song is about a friend of the singers who died. He is creating a simile or metaphor between how he feels without his lost friend and how a captain feels when his ship is about to go down in the cold barren salt sea.

Oh, wow | Reviewer: SomeStudent | 10/13/07

Scrolling through iTunes and settling on this song was such a coincidence.

The line "And I wish for one more day to give my love and repay debts," never rang more true.

Before you find yourself a body washed up on the shore, know that what you have said affects your position now. I think the lyrics suggest some kind of reflection they wish they had done.

You will fully understand this song when your ship is dashed to bits on the reef and you have no option but to accept that the risks you have taken on love have lead you here.

Different Meaning | Reviewer: Kar | 9/28/07

I have always thought the meaning of this song is more then jsut a bad a love. I first heard this song at a christian camp so I have always inputed it as a biblical relationship. It might not be but listen to it again and think about lonely lives and how helpless u feel without God but how he he doesn't leave and how a funeral separates you. I love it!!!

Amazing | Reviewer: Aj | 9/13/07

This is my favorite Brand new song and its because how deep it is. It makes you really think and most music these days doesnt do that. I would have to go back to Nirvana and smells like teen spirit to have a song with such meaning and have it be as deep. Me and my gf broke up after 3 and a half years and this song just fits it all together.

Amazing | Reviewer: AJ | 9/13/07

This has recently become my favorite song after I really focused on the lyrics and the meaning. Honestly you dont find songs that are this deep anymore, I havent seen a song this well written since Nirvana Smells like teen spirit. Me and my gf just broke up after almost 4 years and this song fits us perfectly and it gets me through the day. Also when he says "I spoke the words (after the storm) but never gave a thought to what they all could mean." I think he means that he broke up with the girl and he didnt expect that he would be the one missing her.

i'd like someone's input on this | Reviewer: -Jason H. | 9/6/07

"they call them rogues; they travel fast and alone-"
-i think what he may be talking about here is a rogue, a thief, as in a pirate or 'sea rogues' as they are sometimes called, that stole his loves affections. a fast thief that darted in and attacked the relationship as it began during a time of trial: four months at sea, four months of calm seas-meaning the beginning of the relationship, which was tranquil, peaceful-to be pounded in the shallows-an argument, a hard ship that they were going through, during which the thief stole her heart. <- ? tell me if someone agrees with my theory.

-altogether i think this song is about love, or a person he loved that led to a trial in which they broke apart, and before he could ask for forgiveness, or they could make amends, she was gone. separated by a 'funeral' her death...

this song is beautiful, and i love it. it really moves me. and i think these are the best lyrics i've ever seen put into music.
