i really doubt Jesse is a struggling christian. I think that he is expressing through these lyrics that he used to believe in christianity, and after many negative experiences, is thoroughly realizing that the religion is false and has let him down. Hence the line "I used to pray when God was listening."

its not that jesses a struggling christian, i think you are taking this song way out of context.
an artist paints on canvas, a musician paints on silence
i dont think it has anything to do with religion.

Jesse is a christian struggling. He knows he is falling away from the lord even though he does not want to. Hence "the ship of fools im on will sink".
I really like the part "now iv made this bed and cant fall asleep in it". I too am a struggling christian. I know what i should do but have trouble doing what is right. Its amazing how much a person could mess up and live such a dirty life but God still loves us. Many people think they have messed up so bad they cant be forgiven. I think thats how Jesse feels. Jesus died for our sins and we can all be forgiven if we ask and except him.

it's hey paid for that mistake, with Sure it's him? before that. it's a simulated conversation between two people watching a dude run into traffic.

Never hit the brakes
There's no time to save him,
He's run out in the street
Anybody know his name?
I think I recognize him
He Sure as hell paid for that mistake
You messed up | Reviewer: Anonymous | 3/10/07
He says "He sure as hell paid for that mistake"
not "He's made of our mistakes"
i listened to it a few times and it sounds right
