Its funny to see people say other people are wrong about what a song means. It means different things to different people so... how about the song means whatever it means to whoever is listening.
Not just about jesus... | Reviewer: Kaiser | 10/21/07
Its not just about Jesus. I think the song is mainly about depression and how he wants to die but hes afraid of alot of things. Jesse says "When i arrive i wont know anyone." Hes talking about if he went to heaven or the afterlife or whatever it would be the same as life here (which is what hes trying to escape) in that he will still be alone.
I dont think this portays Jesus in a positive light at all, the tone he takes in the words he chooses almost mocks Jesus, or doesnt take him seriously like where he says "Well, Jesus Christ, I’m alone again So what did you do those three days you were dead? Because this problem is gonna last More than the weekend". Jesses' lyrics tend to have a sense of sarcasm or dryness to them, i dont think this is an exception.
The end is fuzzy for me but taking a stab i would say that hes talking to jesus and making a parallel metaphor about needing jesus and needing people, his fears about fucking up (a relationship, or just in general) and desperation to be a part of something. When he asks to see a sign its sounds like hes asking whether to give up on life or not.
I dont think it has much to do with jesus, its just the medium he uses to make metaphors and give personification to his problems, which are mainly about being alone. I think its artfully done and i really enjoy the song, its a nice change.
Its also art which can be taken many ways, i think my interpretation is pretty accurate. Then again im atheist so maybe its biased.

I think its about Jesse being torn about what he feels. I think its alot of confusion; sorting it all out and such.
Well, Jesus Christ I’m not scared to die
But I’m a little bit scared of what comes after
( Duh, saying that he isn't sure. Maybe he doesnt believe there is anything after, but what if there is? I know that scares me. I dont believe in god, but sometimes, the thought jsut, it gets me. What if there is hell, becauase surely thats wher I will go. Not that he is frightened to die, but who isnt afraid of eternal damnation? I mean, you have to be an idiot not to be. )
Do I get the gold chariot
Do I float through the ceiling
Do I divide and pull apart
( this speaks for itself. its a question, what happens. Duh. )
Cause my bright is too slight to hold back all my dark
( This is where he is referring that he is afraid that his darkness will overshadow the good in him when he dies and that, well its pretty scary. )
I know you're coming in the night like a thief
( It says in the bible, judgement day will come like a theif in the night. )
But I’ve had some time alone to hone my lying technique
( lying to himself about things. He tries to say to himself that he doesnt believe in the after, but he does, but he has almost had himself convinced. )
I know you think that I’m someone you can trust
But I’m scared I’ll get scared and I swear I’ll try to nail you back up
( He means here, that if he starts believeing in god again and feels guilt for not, he will repent or whatever, and bring god back into his life, admitting to cowardice? He is scared he will get too scared to face whats after alone. ) )
(everyone now)
So do you think that we could work out a sign
So I’ll know it's you and that it's over so I won't even try
( because god/ jesus knows everything )
I know you're coming for the people like me
( the ones who didnt eblieve but feared the end. )
But we all got wood and nails
tongue tied in hate factories
And we sleep inside of this machine
( but hes saying that everyone has their wrongs and sins and that we all are equal, and the end is coming for everyone. Everything we do has some affect on the beliefs of peoples etc. )
Look at the title... | Reviewer: Wyatt | 10/9/07
Its about god guys. The title is called JESUS CHRIST. You can figure it out. I still like the song, even if I am not religious. It is a good melow song except for the end where it picks up. Nicely done.
your right | Reviewer: Anonymous | 10/8/07
most of you are right...this song isnt about religion its about life...and god is life..its about a person being torn between living in the world...doing secular things...and living for god...just like god says will happen..god says we will be tempted...and we will have alot of things thrown at us..religion is corrupt...so just leave that out of everything...thers so much more then a bunch of rules to follow..god made your life...be thankful

Yea. | Reviewer: Mr. T | 10/4/07
I love the people who say leave religion out of it, because their totally wrong. This song is primarily about it. You can interpret it as not having religion, but thats not how jesse wrote it for.
wowowowow. | Reviewer: meli | 10/4/07
this song is absolutely amazing. and it has nothing to do with religion. im pretty sure jesse just meant to express the feelings about being torn apart and questioning things, and since the everyone is basically losing faith in god these days by becoming athiest/agnostic (im agnostic), he used jesus as an example, but the song is nothing religious. its beautiful, amazing lyrics, and the tune is great.
amazing | Reviewer: tristan | 10/2/07
this song hits deep within me...in a way i cant even explain..but if i was to explain...it would sound exactly like this song.

Lol, you guys fail... | Reviewer: Jiggy | 9/24/07
This song is not whatsoever about believing in god, or faith, at all. It's about being torn apart between two things, and being tempted to do the wrong one of the two.
This song has nothing to do with religion. I am athiest, and I love this song, and he didn't use jesus's name to make it religious, but instead to use him as an example of what he should do.
Great words | Reviewer: adam | 9/25/07
I think this song is a fantastic example of the way people percieve christ and christianity in the western world. Jesse is also the best lyricist i have ever heard.
The fact that Jesse is contemplating accepting salvation from Jesus, but is torn between many decisions involved with it. For example - he wont know anyone in heaven as none of his friends are saved, that he will be a failure. These are all things that westerners put in the way of finding jesus' love. We think that if we become a christian then we will just fail and just be a hypocrit (so why bother trying if we are going to be failures).
In a sense that is true - we will never be perfect and we wont live up the standards god has set for us. However this doesnt mean that we are failures, it just means that we are people who have failed (which everyone has).
The main message of the Gospel is that God has said to all of us "I know that you will fail, you are not perfect, but i Love you so much that Jesus can pay the price for your imperfections". God doesnt see us as failures - just human and humans fail at times.
What we have to look at is the fact that through Jesus death on the cross we dont have to worry about our imperfection. We can live free of torment and concentrate on showing love to others and acting the way God wants us to - without fear of being judged by God for all our wrong doing.
Please if this has hit home for you contact someone who is a christian and ask them about it further. Accepting Jesus is an awesome decision - it wont make life easy but it will change the way you see yourself and act in life.
Thanks guys and find God.

Don't try to make something so simple into something much more complicated.
It's a beautiful song, leave religion out of it.
