My opinion | Reviewer: cale | 11/10/07

Each of you is making a good point. You are the only ones who can determine what the song means to you.
However, in my opinion this song is talking about Jesus Christ and the Singer’s troubles.

"Jesus Christ, that's a pretty face
The kind you'd find on someone that could save
If they don't put me away
It’ll be a miracle”
- This is talking about Jesus Christ, who is the savior of all Christians.

"Do you believe you're missing out?
That everything good is happening somewhere else
With nobody in your bed
The night is hard to get through"
- Obviously, this is just talking about being alone, the absence of someone, and how hard it is to be alone.

"Well, Jesus Christ, I’m alone again
So what did you do those three days you were dead?
Because this problem is gonna last
More than the weekend"
- Jesus died on the cross, and then went to either purgatory or hell and stayed there for three days, depending on what you believe. Also a weekend is three days long, (Friday, Saturday, and Sunday). This most nearly means that the singer is alone and has been, and is seeking the advice of Jesus and trying to ask what he should do to help himself during his alone time.

"Well, Jesus Christ I’m not scared to die
But I’m a little bit scared of what comes after
Do I get the gold chariot
Do I float through the ceiling"
- This is referring to the Bible where it describes an afterlife, and the singer is actually questioning his own faith and saying "I'm not scared to die, but I just hope that what I have believed in is really true because I'm scared that it might not be, which means there is no afterlife and that this is it". Also, in the Bible, it talks about the afterlife and mentions the good people being around gold chariots. Next, the "float through the ceiling" part is a common theory among humans that says that when they die, their soul floats up to heaven which is a parallel to a ghost floating through the ceiling.

"Do I divide and pull apart
Cause my bright is too slight to hold back all my dark
This ship went down in sight of land
And at the gates does Thomas ask to see my hands?"
- First, the "Do I divide and pull apart, Cause my bright is too slight to hold back all my dark" part is a reference to Satan. In the bible, God is described as light and Satan is described as dark, and this most nearly means that the singer doesn't have enough faith in God to keep all of the demons in him at bay. Also, “This ship went down in sight of land” could mean that the singers fears (the water around the ship) destroyed him before he could get to safety (land). Second, the "And at the gates does Thomas ask to see my hands?" part is a reference to when in the Bible, after Jesus returns and is in His glorified body meaning that no one could recognize Him by his looks but only by his actions. After talking to the Apostles for a while, they all believe that He really was Jesus, except for Thomas who asks to see Jesus' hands to see if they really had the marks from the nails on the cross. After seeing that the marks are there, Thomas believed that Jesus had returned.

"I know you're coming in the night like a thief
But I’ve had some time alone to hone my lying technique
I know you think that I’m someone you can trust
But I’m scared I’ll get scared and I swear I’ll try to nail you back up"
- The "I know you're coming in the night like a thief" part is a reference to a verse in the bible that says that Jesus is coming in the night like a thief. (Revelations 16:15) Also, the "I know you think that I’m someone you can trust but I’m scared I’ll get scared and I swear I’ll try to nail you back up" means that the Singer is saying "I know that you think that I've always been faithful, but I'm questioning my faith and I'm scared that when you come, I'll get scared to die and not want to go with you” thus betraying Jesus and figuratively nailing Him back up on the cross.

“So do you think that we could work out a sign
So I’ll know it's you and that it's over so I won't even try
I know you're coming for the people like me”
- The “So do you think that we could work out a sign, so I’ll know it's you and that it's over so I won't even try” part means that the singer just wants a sign to strengthen his faith so that when he gets the sign, he will accept that Jesus has come to save him and he wont be scared of death. Lastly, the “I know you're coming for the people like me” means that the singer knows that Jesus is coming for sad and lonely people like him so that he is able to save them from their misery.

Once again, each of you is making a good point. You are the only ones who can determine what the song means to you. This is just my opinion.

i think... | Reviewer: Anonymous | 11/10/07

that this song is the average american way of thinking. maybe he's just confused about whether god's real or not. he's probably thinkng about death and starting to realize that there IS something after.

sound like the song of a confused guy.

he references the bible a lot. like an awful lot. im a christ follower and i recognize the references he's using.

maybe he used to be a christian or something, he seems to know a lot.

just sounds like his interenal conflicts wriiten in a song.

but im not him so who am i to say anyways?

thats just what i got from it.

Another review! D: | Reviewer: hax | 11/11/07

I always just thought it was about dying and what happens next. Rather than it being particularly religious. I just think it's a good song really.
Also:
I think some of the lyrics are wrong? I dunno.
I think it's just a few words nothing major like.

Its just a song | Reviewer: Steven | 11/6/07

I think your all kinda looking to much into this song, im pretty sure the whole song isnt about jesus christ, its about bad times, the days where u dont even want to get out of bed, and when it says "And at the gates does Thomas ask to see my hands?" i dont think hes looking for the marks of christ, i think hes looking at his wrists... but eyah this song is amazeing and so are brand enw and im pumped for there new cd

HAHAHA | Reviewer: Matty Love | 11/5/07

you are all little emo kids over analyzing a song. why dont we all just enjoy it and not try to sound like you are more intelligent than the rest of us by using big words and acting like you wrote the song. we can all agree that songs mean different things to different people. its an art, its how you view it. but when you try to get all philosophical and shit, you just sound like a noob.

I don't get it... | Reviewer: Troy | 11/4/07

A christian by the name of sara said this: "You have to be stupid to not know this has some relation to Jesus...look at the title dumb asses." huh... I don't get it. It makes me glad to be where I am. This is WAR! Every line is about who I don't want to write about anymore... right... Anyway... I don't get it... sara, that is... Just pretend you didnt wanna get caught... XD

You all are a little right.. | Reviewer: sara | 11/2/07

Each of you has a good point. This song IS what it means to you. So...it's pointless to say what your opinion on the song is and how it makes you feel. HOWEVER-it IS talking about Jesus...as in the Jesus in the Bible. You can't argue against that.

"Jesus Christ, that's a pretty face
The kind you'd find on someone that could save"
-this is talking to jesus christ, the savior of all christian beleivers.
"Well, Jesus Christ, I’m alone again
So what did you do those three days you were dead?"
Jesus died on the cross for three days...to me he's saying "what were you doing? from what i can see in my life it wasn't for the greater-good of man kind.."

"Do I get the gold chariot
Do I float through the ceiling"
- This is reffering to the Bible where it talks about the after life and mentions gold chariots.
How ever- the float through the ceiling part is a common theory made among humans to beleive that they're soal floats to heaven...like a ghost goes through the ceiling...

"And at the gates does Thomas ask to see my hands?"
In the Bible, Thomas asks Jesus to show him his hands...to see if they had really been peirced with nails and if he died on the cross.

"I know you're coming in the night like a thief"
There's a verse in the Bible that says Jesus is coming in the night like a theif.Revelations 16:15...I beleive.

You have to be stupid to not know this has some relation to Jesus...look at the title dumb asses.

uhh | Reviewer: caitlin | 11/2/07

so i know that i should interpret this my own way, but i feel stupid. i love brand new to death, but i'm also really really Catholic, and my dad asked me what i was listening to one day... so i showed him it was this song and he asked if they were being sac religious or not, and i told him i really had no clue. i'd like to know... if someone could tell me...

not about religion | Reviewer: Chantelle | 11/1/07

I think that the song is written to look like it is about religion, but it actually goes deeper then that. He is really just comparing his porblem to the one that jesus had. "So what did you think those 3 days you were dead? cuz this problems going to last more then the weekend." He's almost saying that whatever his problem is, it is greater then Jesus's death and therefor must be... very big. But I agree with user umm.... that the song can mean completely different things to different people and that doesnt make anyone wrong. Artists write songs because they want people to feel. If this song makes you feel then it has done it's job, and it therefor a good song!
I love it.

Hm... | Reviewer: this isn't highschool | 10/30/07

I think that this song can be interpreted in many ways by the listener. But all in all, I think Jesse wrote it about his fear of the afterlife, and how he felt curious about it.
I hear a lot of people who say that this song is not about religon, but because of the fact that Jesse and some members of the band went to a Christian school as teens, I feel that it is.
But in the end, all that matters is what you think of it, and how the song affects you, positively or negatively.
I mean, the band openly admits that all they want to do is be remembered.
If this song (or ANY B&N song, for that matter) made you remember them, then I think that's all they could ask for.
This song is absolutely beautiful, and the guitars and vocals working together are absolute genius. :DD
So make of it what you wish, just ultimately remember it as a gorgeous song, that you can interpret any way.

Y FIGHT | Reviewer: UMMM... | 10/27/07

Y must we fight about what the song means only jesse knows. And im pretty sure he meant it for it to touch people which doesnt mean it has to hit people the same way. Just be glad the songs there. Does it really change how much we like the song if it has to do with God or not. I know me and my friend had a big talk about it and we decided to let it be!

One of the many | Reviewer: Sandra | 10/28/07

I love brand new to death, it has a wonderful meaning. and as far as meanings go, the song itself is more than enough.

your own | Reviewer: cas | 10/25/07

Everyone has their own interpretation, as does the writer. and you can't say that you honestly know the true meaning unless you've talked to the writer directly. So stop arguing over whether or not it is really about Jesus Christ. It is what you want it to be, and will touch people in different ways.
