I too saw Boomtown rats the first time on SCTV (what a great show) and fell in love. I was the only one to listen to them in my corner of North Dakota, I'm sure. This song hooked me, and many more on their albums (which I still have, still listen to).

I first heard this song, and of the Boomtown Rats, back in 1982 when they performed it on SCTV. This was the first song they did and while it was obviously lip-synched, it blew me away. I don't know what it is about this song, but for me everything just comes together and clicks perfectly; the lyrics, the melody, the backing vocals, everything. There isn't a false note or wasted word anywhere.
I was in high school in 1982 and tried to hook some of my friends onto The Boomtown Rats after this but no one would bite. Bob Geldof, the lead singer of the group, would of course go on to fame for co-writing "Do They Know it's Christmas?", for starring in the movie version of "Ping Floyd: The Wall" and for his noble and inexhaustable efforts for Live Aid.
I became a huge fan of the group after hearing this song and bought some of their albums (and they were albums back then, not CDs). In my opinion, this is one of the truly great songs of the '80s.
