It's not about Jesus | Reviewer: Pauline Barraza | 10/25/09
I can't remember where, but I recently saw an old interview with one of the members of The Band. They said it was about how people in these small towns (in Canada, I think), have you pass along chores: oh, you're going to there, well take this to this person, and I'll stay here and do this for you. Kind of like paying it forward.
Perhaps not about Jesus' birth | Reviewer: Anonymous | 7/25/09
I've heard elsewhere that "the weight" is a reference to ghonneria - the catching of an STD. Hence, with each verse, the leaving of something behind. This would be a less unusual topic for the 60s than Jesus' birth.
This song confuses me | Reviewer: Anonymous | 6/21/07
I don't understand, are they homeless, are they dogs? Who's Crazy Chester. Who actuallt knows the true meaning of this song?

To me, it sounds like they are all at heaven's door, waiting to find out their fate; yet, the singer is there too early...before his time and is getting sent back from a near death experience
The Weight by The Band | Reviewer: Casey Farrell | 2/21/05
Song symbolizes Jesus' birth and how he was sent to earth by God to care for people. A rather unusual topic for the late 60's.
