The Reviews about Only The Good Die Young (page 6/ 10)
------ performed by Billy Joel

Funny | Reviewer: Stevielee | 11/17/07

Listen guys, I have listened to this song for to many times, but this is the first time that I ever listen good and read the lyrics, personally I found kinda funny. Just look at this:

"You didn't count on me
When you were counting on your rosary "

and you can argue about what this song all about. But I just love it and I have so much fun listening to it. I had the same experience, they told me that God is the only one that counts in your life, but they didn't tell you that there are also people that you're going to meet in your life and they didn't tell you about these people could touch your feelings like no one ever did.
This songs tells you to have fun in life, because before you know it it will end.
And that you dont have to focus on something to show that you are a true believer. Just have fun in life in everything you do.

"virginia" | Reviewer: Anonymous | 11/14/07

It's not JUST about sex!!! It's about SEX and RELIGION. I WAS "Virginia" about 45 years ago
and there's nothing JUST or trivial about this.
The Catholic church did a number on us Catholic girls, but so did the boys like the one in the song. No easy answers..IMHO

Good song | Reviewer: Anonymous | 11/7/07

Billy Joel flat out stated that the song was literal. It had nothing to do with war. It wasn't even specifically about a Jewish boy as I've seen some refer to. It was simply about a boy trying to convince his catholic girlfriend to have sex with him. Its about enjoying life before you die.

EVERYONES opinion matters just as much as yours. that includes mine. & just so you know, my opinion is that this song is about teenagers that are scared that life is going by too fast. This boy just wants to have fun, & he has a crush on this girl, & he's saying she should just loosen up a little. It doesnt not have to be about sex. He's saying he cares for her, & though their families are different, she should give him a chance because he may be the best thing that ever happened to her. & i agree with every word theyre saying.

I this one of my favorite songs, and I think it should be enjoyed for what it is, and not what it can be Interpreted as. it's just a fun song to listed to and enjoy.

SEX | Reviewer: Julia | 10/28/07

This song is CLEARLY about a horny high school boy. Applying in-depth symbolism to a song can make it mean anything! The song is talking about a guy trying to convince a catholic girl to give up her morals and do him. Simple. End of story.

Make Love not War | Reviewer: voodoochyld28 | 10/28/07

My first impress of this song is very similar to Dalton's. It is about a Jewish high school kid trying to convince a Catholic school girl to have pre-marital sex. There are several references to catholic teachings. The line "I run with a dangerous crowd...We might be laughing a bit too loud...but that never hurt no one" is a reference to smoking pot.

So basically the Jewish boy is getting all hot from the Catholic school girl's uniform, so he tries to get her to smoke pot and have sex. Trust me I know where he's coming from.

The line "Only the good die young" may be a reference to abortion, or living dangerously without consequences.

War? | Reviewer: Q | 10/7/07

Billy joel wrote quite a few songs about war, but this isnt one of them. I could see it being considered anti-war, but then again it could just as easily be about global warming. Looking too hard into things can be just as ignorant as not looking hard enough.

are you serious? | Reviewer: rob | 10/4/07

lyra-
are you kidding me? "If you set out to find an allegory, you ALWAYS will". do you really think that billy joel is such an idiot that he wouldnt think to express his view on the war in this music. a little ignorant if you ask me.

...dun dun dun | Reviewer: Lyra | 9/20/07

I think people are reading too much into this. If you set out to find an allegory, you ALWAYS will. It sounds like its about sex...
...
...
so it's probably about sex. Not necessarily in high school, but that's not really the point. you shouldn't assume that anyone who is a virgin is in high school.
But, sure, it COULD all be about war. If thats what you want it to be about. It could be about almost anything.
But none of this is really the point. It is a song, the music is its poetry. I think that, and the feeling you get hearing it, is more important than the lyrics.
