Look i really don't understand everyone's issues with it, its great, its catchy and living life to the full is a pretty awesome message, yeah you need to consider what your doing but that doesn't mean don't have fun. I'm a christian in a Catholic School and me and my friends all have an INSANE time. We love this song and played it non stop the other day at school (infront of all the catholic teachers) Guess What!!!!! They were all tapping their feet and dancing so :P to you haters. I was going to give out an intelligent review but my real desire is to ask all you "good Christian people whose relationships never were based on sex and you are so much better than those silly secular folk you know who have promiscuous sex" all the time to please quit.
I hate how a girl can't be "nice" AND "sexually active". It's like we defend our friends who are sexually active outside of the confines of marriage by saying, "they're such nice girls". We go through great lengths to prove our sexually active friend isn't a "slut". And so what if she's promiscuous? That does not define her as a person. Not really. It's one aspect of a whole being, and some people value sex more than others, but they shouldn't be shamed for enjoying premarital sex.
So, in short, please quit the slutshaming. It's harmful to you and me and your future daughters.

Just so you know, when you said we'll never be saints, you're wrong. Anyone who is in heaven is a saint!:) Just only certain people are RECOGNIZED saints. So, I (a Catholic) fully intend to become a saint, and I hope you will to:)

Guys, I'm Lutheran (the closest to being Catholic as it gets) and have no problem with this song. I got a white dress and party and MY confirmation. Seriously. I have noooo idea why everyone is making such a big deal about this. Still. You know, Billy Joel makes a good point about hanging around with sinners. Whether we want to admit it or not, we all sin. We aren't saints. And we never will be. This song is over three decades old ('77, baby!). Cut it some slack. Gah. And, yeah, this song is about learning to live a little. What's life with out any fun?
...Ya kiddin' me? | Reviewer: Kibble | 3/31/11
I've loved this song since mid-childhood, I am a good Christian girl, and I always figured he was trying to get a girl to just HAVE FUN IN LIFE. AND HE IS. Shut your f-cking mouths about your f-cking anti-Semitic views. NOBODY WANTS TO HEAR IT! So, chill out and enjoy the genius that is Billy Joel, or just go away :D
And for the record, it may not be about sex. Not everything is about sex!!!!
Have a nice day! :D
Song by A Perfidious Jew | Reviewer: Anonymous | 1/31/11
So typical, the jews were responsible for the reprehensible changes that came with Vat II. Those animals infiltrated the Catholic Church and tried to destroy her. However, as the good book says "The gates of hell shall not prevail against it". So just pray for the perfidious jew billy joel as traditional Catholics should do.

I was raised Catholic and I'll say this much. Billy is right to poke fun at us. Catholics take themselves so seriously! Its just a song about a young boy who wanted a Catholic school girl. Pro-lust does not mean anti-catholic, its simply a inner monologue he had with himself about a girl he couldn't get. we've all had those moments where we really wanted something and tried our hardest to get it. He's a artist and he knows that sex sells, plus its an entertaining story. In my opinion, if you can't laugh about this song and just enjoy it, then you shouldn't involve yourself with main stream culture. You'll just be causing yourself undue stress and pain.

I am a catholic and I absolutely love this song!!! (: (: I have very strong morals as well as the girl who this song is referring to, yet I appreciate his talents immensely! I'm actually learning this song on my guitar right now (: So don't turn this song into a religious debate..thats not what its meant for :)
Moral dilemma | Reviewer: Anonymous | 12/24/10
"Um, I saved myself for marriage and i lived to regret it. So there u go, now you know someone, and can never use this line again. I'm pretty sure if my ex husband and i had slept together before marraige we could have avoided a lot of the chemistry problems that we never even knew we had before marriage. I also think i wasted the beauty of my youth saving myself. Couldve been living my life instead of "saving" myself for my ex husband. "
I saved myself for my wife. We've been married for over 10 years now. Sex was never the foundation for our love for each other. I'm glad we waited. And it still gets better and better every day.
Chemistry was not your only issue.

This went in such a screwy way. WT H ppl. Good isn't defined by religion. Good is relative, no matter if you support life or anti-life. Both have values of + and -. The question is who is bringing life to whom? and what is life? See, it would have been good and bad at the same time. being judgmental is foolish because everyone is playing a different game. Which is why religion without loose philosophy is "F.A.I.L" it is inferior to have strict structure.

"Personally, I hope Virginia was strong enough to resist giving in to all the undue pressure visited upon her by this rebellious seducer"
Billy Joel has said himself that virtually every critic missed the most important part of the lyrics - he fails to get anywhere with the girl, and she keeps her chastity. So, there ya go. He's not bashing Catholicism, he's not saying everyone needs to have sex to have fun! It's not anti-Catholic in any way, shape, or form. She keeps her chastity, doesn't she? She doesn't throw caution to the wind and say, "Forget my religion, I'm gonna sleep with you!" No. If anything, it doesn't show what's wrong with society today. I consider it to be out of place among other songs that are about sex (and getting it).
Freedom of speech online | Reviewer: bill daher | 10/28/10
The whole thing here is about people who would never stand up to what they believe but only online in a chat arena. If people would be more verbal whether they believe that this song is anti-Catholic or whether they believe that Christians are to open, discuss it so you may learn something. If only Christians, as myself, appear to speak openly, then they would be the only ones I would trust. If we have any freedoms left, let it be what we believe and we don't have to be rude about it either. If you disagree with a singer, turn him off and don't buy his stuff.
Great Song | Reviewer: Anonymous | 10/25/10
If you were ever a "good" Catholic girl from a good Catholic family you would understand how realistic this song is. It includes the love and lust of people weighing against the morals and rules of your religious upbringing. These are decisions lots of us had to deal with since we were teenagers. I love that Joel also throws in the great contradiction of the notion of the religious people being condescending to others instead of praying for them as Jesus would do. If the holy are so holy why are they always the first to throw stones? Selective reading or interpretation of the good book, I guess. Why can't we all just be responsible for ourselves, have fun, laugh a little and realize all the saints are long dead before they become saints. Music is made to enlighten and lighten are life, enjoy it and quit criticizing. It is a creative outlet to express one's feelings not to express everyone's. As the others said if you don't like it don't listen, you know, make your own choices just like all good Catholic girls do!
HAHAHA really people | Reviewer: Bourne2014 | 10/18/10
1) Catholicism and Protestant Christianity.....are barely the same thing anymore if you are sticking to the strict tenements of your denomination. 2) This song is hardly attacking either so there is no point in getting hyper defensive over it, at the very least I would expect people of religion to feel bad for this guy if you think he is missing the point of life. And people of every religion, especially Christian need to stop being so easily offended. 3) If the song is really about the girl not having sex with him...maybe he should've just tried to get with another girl if that's what he was looking for, there are too many girls out there to spend the time trying to get one of the few that doesn't want to have sex before marriage to break her morals.
My, oh my | Reviewer: Anonymous | 10/11/10
I am a Catholic. I went to a Catholic school and go to church and I am not offended at all. Actually, I was just singing this song and THAT is why I looked up the lyrics, not because I wanted to make sure they were slandering my religion. Billy Joel is an artist. He is singing about what it is like to live life to the fullest. I'm pretty sure a song about rape would literally be ABOUT RAPE. You can tell what a vocalist is trying to express by how they are singing, not what they sing.
