The Reviews about Only The Good Die Young (page 5/ 10)
------ performed by Billy Joel

I appreciate that this Comments section is mainly about how to interpret the lyrics of the song, and there are a lot of interesting concepts out there, but I've read a certain phrase too many times to let it go - 'It's about the music, not the lyrics'. Personally I think that if it WERE about the music and the lyrics were unimportant, then there wouldn't BE lyrics to the song.
And as was stated in a few reviews before - Billy Joel himself said it was fairly literal - 'It's not so much anti - Catholic as it is pro - lust'

this song speaks the truth. i have been forced to go to church my whole life, so i know what all happens there. the mother and the daughter in this song were lead to believe that they were better then other people because they were catholic. the church is as corrupt as the government. and its so true that sinners are much more fun. amen.

you know i've gone to a catholic school my entire life, and i've heard this song quite a few times, but i looked up the lyrics today, and i must say it made me chuckle. by the way, i agree with the others who have said that louise is intelligent beyond her years, and i personally think hers is the best review on here. on the other hand the truth remains that very few catholic girls would hold out long enough for a guy to write a song to convince them. sad but true.

does anybody just enjoy songs anymore? the great thing about art is that, yes, it can be interperated differently by every living soul. that's the great part about it, though, isn't it? wouldn't you rather see it in relation to your own life versus other people's?
Louise is right! sit back and enjoy. stop overthinking; put your mind on standby and live!

It is completely and totally about sex. You can take it to an even greater level when you consider that "To die" is a sexual euphemism meaning to have an orgasm. Shakespeare commonly used this to describe sexual relations. And since the song is about trying to have sex with this catholic school girl, he's talking about living life to the fullest, having fun and getting laid

Five whole pages of reviews. Wow.
Okay, let me first introduce myself. I'm 13 years old and I grew up listening to Billy Joel with my now 47 year old parents. I've heard this song some up-hundred times, but, to be perfectly honest, I never gave the meaning of the song the slightest thought. Until today. I was simply looking up the lyrics to the song so I could sing along. No big deal. But then I saw this incredible 5 pages of reviews. So I scrolled back to the first page and read the reviews in the order they were submitted. After that full 20 minutes of reading all I can think to say is OhhhMyGoshh.
Before coming to my own conclusions, I've taken into consideration all of the previously stated opinions. (Which is exactly what they are. OPINIONS. So stop thinking you're RIGHT. You have simply stated your OPINION. As I am doing now.) So, for what its worth, here is how I have decided to interpret this song:
Only the good die young is a metaphorical expression. It doesn't actually mean the good DIE young (as in their hearts stop beating, they're put in a casket, mourned over, and buried). No, no, no; it means they "die" as in they don't live. Only the good are too caught up in being good to actually live their life to the fullest. Billy Joel isn't saying that if you go to church, do as you're told, and never cut out of line that you are literally going to shrivel up and die at a young age; however, he is saying that if you don't have some fun, get in a little trouble, and be crazy for a while, then you aren't really living. You die young if you quit being a kid before you actually grow up. Get it?
That's what I get out of the refrain of the song. But as for the verses, debate it up. Whether those lines are about virginity or war I really don't know, but, honestly, I really don't care. Billy Joel is a fantastic musician and I really love this song. Besides, if you're reading too deeply into the lines of the verses, aren't you doing just what Billy Joel is preaching against in the chorus? Here he is telling us to just live and love, plain and simple. And here we are trying to go and make things complicated.
So for your own cynical sakes, just crank up the volume and sing along at the top of your lungs; remember what it really means to be young.
Quit being so critical; enjoy a great song.

i dont think any of you are right i think its about a non christian boy telling a christian girl that life isnt worht it if you dont live it to the fullest (and yeah ok hes also convicing her to have sex with him but still) its not allll sex

the real deal | Reviewer: freebird | 11/18/07
alright idk why all u creeps r trying to make this song into some kinky
scenario where an immoral guy seduces this goody-goody catholic girl into having relations w/ him... but this song is clearly about the diff between the values that are mandated by one religion (Catholcism) and the values that are implemented by a youthful spirit (Puberty) ... namely a defiant one who is not afraid of the repercussions of "the wrath of GOD" whom he is trying to state that hed rather live (and possibly die) leading a life having fun than lead a "pure" life (and also ultimately a "pure" death) not knowing of the fruits of life... hence "only the good die young..." since the young r the only ones who defy these mandated laws and r stricken by the wrath of GOD to show that they were wrong in doing so... the young (good ones) die
