Deanna, it seems you like to assert yourself in songs like most people. "I appreciate you standing up for good little Catholic girls, for I portray one. However, I never was nor am a good little Catholic. I take it what you mean is, you 'appear' to be a ‘good’ catholic girl. Good meaning perfect within morals?".../'he'/ meant that /saints/ (as in those who feel they live life by the bible) are always crying for those that are sinners, rather than living their own lives and having a little fun." Can we not live our own life and pity those absorbed in a life of sin leading to tragedy - finding joy in beauty in healing? You speak of how you love to sin and how the saints lock you away. I believe it is you that locks yourself away from God because of sin. All people on this earth sin/have sinned excluding Jesus. "And did you ever think about the fact that you can sin all week and confess on Sunday and you're good again?" Are you to speak for all Catholics and Christians? As humans we sin. "I am lucky enough to be able to have stood up to it with a peace sign on one hand, and a middle finger on the other.” I would hope that you come to realize the irony in this statement. "And that goes for all of you over-think-it idiots. Learn to live." I believe you will find that God only pushes you as far as you want him to. The stronger you become the harder he encourages you to better yourself and in turn the world around you.

Ok well I am a teenage catholic girl and I have always liked this song. It has a catchy melody and I like billy joel's music in general. However I have always had disagreement with the lyrics and I think it is naive to pretend that billy joel had no meaning behind what he was saying. One review that really disgusted me was by the name 'only the good?' where the reviewer argued that people who worry too much about being good miss out on life and never achieve anything. I think that this could not be further from the truth. All my family are catholic and aim to lead good lives and they have all achieved so much in their lives in many different areas. If you really think about it it the components of our society that are against being good such as drugs, violence, pornography etc that cause all the pain and misery and lead to people not reaching their full potential. Furthermore, considering Billy Joel has been married twice and has recently coming out of rehab, I think it is ridiculous to look to him for guidance on how to live life. Despite what I have said I don't have a problem with this song, I believe people should be strong enough to decide their path of life for themselves and not be so easily influenced by celebrities who often have the most troublesome lives of all. I realise that no-one is perfect and everyone makes mistakes in life. However, I would certainly argue that someone who has lived a good, principled life would look back with much less regret and a greater sense of contentment than someone who has to face the consequences of always choosing the most instantly gratifying option.

Oh and just to that really bitchy girl who started off by saying she is a catholic but then went on to some anti-catholic rant. I have news for you. You're not really a catholic, stop calling yourself one. You may have been baptised and had a confirmation but you obviously couldn't care less about any of the teachings of the catholic church. It's like saying 'i'm a vegetarian' but then only eating meat. Just having the title of catholic means nothing on its own. So stop going around acting like you are one, you're giving the rest of us a bad name.
Thanks :)

Okay, well I just so happen to friggen love this song. And I am Catholic. I always have been. I had a nice white dress and a party on my Confirmation. Walker P., I appreaciate you standing up for good little Catholic girls, for I protray one. However, I never was nor am a good little Catholic. I have made and continue make straight-A's my whole life and have done both sports and every nerdy club imaginable but I too have sinned several times on several different levels and I don't intend to stop. When Billy Joe said:
"I'd rather laugh with the sinners than cry with the saints
the sinners are much more fun...,"
he meant that "saints" (as in those who feel they live life by the bible) are always crying for those that are sinners, rather than living their own lives and having a little fun. I love being a sinner and not letting them "build a temple and locked me away." And did you ever think about the fact that you can sin all week and confess on Sunday and you're good again? Funny how that works, isn't it? You, Walker, remind me of too many of my cousins that have let their parents throw their prime away. And many people, in fact. I am lucky enough to be able to have stood up to it with a peace sign on one hand, and a middle finger on the other. Something that you should have tried years ago, I suspect. Billy Joel is an amazing artist. Stop attacking his songs. And that goes for all of you over-think-it idiots. Learn to live. Oh, and P.S. If you think to say a prayer for me? Don't. I don't want to end up like you. Thank you, and have a nice day.:)
Really? | Reviewer: Rob | 9/21/09
Is that reviwer below me serious? This isn't some affront to Catholocism or religion. This is a catchy song, obviously with sexual background, that's meant to be enjoyed. He's using the Catholic reference because of how restricted some raised in very Catholic households can be. Jesus. (Ahah, it's a pun)
I like this song. :)
"We avoid risks in life so we can make it safely to death."
Billy Joel is a prick | Reviewer: Walker P. | 8/24/09
The song is catchy, and I like quite a few of Billy Joel's songs. However, the anti-Catholic bigotry and narrow-minded hatred in this particular song I can do without. Yes, too many good people die young. But, I don't think a Catholic girl (or any girl for that matter) would be better off by having sex with a sleazy low-life who only thinks of her as a piece of meat to be used and then thrown away. Do you love her (Virginia) Billy? Then put a ring on her finger. Oh, just as I thought. You're not man enough. "Did she (Virginia's mother) ever say a prayer for me?" I am sure she did. Not that you care. And where are these crying saints? I have never seen one. I see a lot of misery, drug abuse, unhappiness, confusion, and suicide though among the so-called "sinners." This song is just another cowardly attack on the Catholic Church.

MY IDOL | Reviewer: miranda | 7/9/09
I'm sure i speak for a lot of people when i say that Billy joel is my idol and now i know what u r thinking; "Oh look thres some loser how worships a dumb 80's rock star" but just hear me out. If Billy joel died i don't know what the hell i would do with my life. He is the one person in this world who has given me courage, hope and faith that i can do anything if i put my mind to it. so i wrote a letter telling him how much i love his music. I'm serious I think he is the best musician, hell the best man (i mean piano man lol) on this planet!

You guys are thinking way too hard about this song. Its meant to be enjoyed when you listen to it. If Billy Joel would rather go to Hell because the sinners are more fun, thats his problem. Theres no point in analyzing the lyrics...
But i do agree with everyone else that this is a really good song :)
only a kids opinion | Reviewer: Anonymous | 5/12/09
really now are people getting so worked up over a song? im christian and i think there is no harm in this song, its just simply tellin you to live your life the way you would like to, and not letting the fear of tomorrow stop you from living it up today. I personally like this song and for everyone who doesnt because of the lyrics, please shut up with your negative opinions, no one wants to hear them and no one gives a shit:) thanks
