The Reviews about Angry Young Man (page 2/ 2)
------ performed by Billy Joel

Angry Young Man | Reviewer: Honest Hank | 5/28/07

This is a great song about those who refuse to see that every argument has two sides. It has been around for nigh on 30 years so don't give me the rich man pretending to have a conscience stuff. I believe Billy's songs are always a very close reflection of his personal life at the time he wrote it, without being banal or heart on the sleeve. It was written in the 70's or early 80's and must be listened to and appreciated in that context. Now if only someone can tell me the album that it was on, cos I was sure I had it on vinyl and seem to have lost it...

I love this song.
It makes so much sense and a lot of you people can or could relate
to this song.

This Song Rocks! | Reviewer: Anonymous | 3/21/07

I saw BJ back in February at the JPJ Arena and I really liked how he opened up his concert with this song. The Prelude is really what builds the momentum of this song up to its fast paced beat. I had no idea that BJ could play so fast to master the notes of this very challenging piece of music flawlessly. I'm going to give it a try on my piano but its going to take a while.

Show me a young Conservative and I'll show you someone with no heart. Show me an old Liberal and I'll show you someone with no brains. - Winston Churchill

This quote probably captures the song.

Its about a person mellowing out and gaining a different perspective as he ages...

Does the angry young man have his place?...sure...but when seen through the eyes of someone older, you might put that so call righteous anger into perspective...

Thus he can admire the angry young man's passion for the noble casues...and yet see that its okay to move on as your perspective on life changes...

but, hey, you guys want to label Billy a sell out...go for it...must still be lost in the "Angry Young Man" stage of life...:)

A theme from an old warhorse | Reviewer: Anonymous | 10/9/05

In response to the original reviewer, let me just say that perhaps you should listen to the lyrics again. He is talking about how the good fight seems futile, a theme he revisits in the River of Dreams album.

You notice that the title is "Angry YOUNG Man" not "Angry OLD Man." He gave us almost four decades of solid music, perhaps it is time to let the old warhorse retire to pasture and work on his classical piano, eh? Maybe it is time for someone else to carry the torch for awhile.

I'm not sure which album this originally was on, the only one I have heard it on was his Russian tour album, which was about building bridges. It's kind of hard to build bridges when the military keeps blowing them up. And BJ has hardly been an antimilitary crusader type, more the common man on the street pointing up themes in modern culture ("New York State of Mind," "The Entertainer," "Keeping the Faith") and the plight of the ordinary man beset by crises ("Captain Jack," ""Allentown," "Downeaster 'Alexa'"). His political themes have been about our confrontation with and negotiation of the past ("We Didn't Start The Fire," "Leningrad," "Goodnight Saigon") rather than contemporary events. In other words he has hardly been a crusader of anything, rather a foil for what might be termed the "man on the stree."

This song sounds more like someone who is tired of protesting, or sees others protesting from outside the system and rejects that as counterproductive, but also as a normal part of life and society. Young men are proper to be angry with society, he seems to be saying, but eventually they will stop rebelling and join mainstream culture. Of course this is a very simplistic view of things, but often does happen.

The Rich Pacifist Sellout | Reviewer: Terry James | 9/3/05

This song presents the view of a once musician who gets rich and then wants a peaceful, unangry world, in which to spend his money.

He loses his passion, his ability to write songs, while condemning the force that gave him the gift, which is now lost, forever.

Do you think, Billy, that if your six year old daughter in Iraq had her leg blown off by a bomb paid for by taxes on your royalties that you might get angry, or not?

When are you going to start writing songs again?
