There are several in his early work, capturing an air of yearning and loss, and Saturday Boy is redolent with a sense of disillusionment even in the midst of discovery. How may of us have some version of ‘dancing in the darkness in the school canteen’, and of the girl we adored but who never really seemed to notice us, or indeed went to ‘those’ parties to which we were not invited?
